Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Lies

Within fifteen minutes, the living room had been transformed into a tactical command post.
The socialites and local politicians were escorted into the formal dining room under the watchful eyes of two armed operators. Tiffany sat on the white leather sofa, sobbing quietly as her phone was confiscated by a federal communications officer. My father sat across from her, his head buried in his hands, realizing that every prominent contact he had spent ten years cultivating had just witnessed him trying to get his own daughter arrested.
General Vance gestured to one of his aides, who carried a heavy ballistic briefcase. The aide set it down on the glass coffee table and clicked the latches open, revealing several thick manila folders stamped with red wax seals.
""Maya,"" General Vance said, pulling out a file. ""Before we transport you to Peterson Space Force Base for your formal transition briefing, there’s an operational matter that requires your immediate signature. But unfortunately, it intersects directly with your family.""
My father looked up sharply. ""What does this have to do with me?""
General Vance opened the folder and dropped a stack of financial printouts onto the table. ""For the past eighteen months, Task Force Nemesis has been tracking illicit offshore financial flows funneled through private real estate holdings in Denver. Shell corporations laundering money for overseas cartels and defense contractors inflating supply chain invoices.""
My father's face went from pale to completely green. He choked on his breath. ""That... that's private corporate accounting. That has nothing to do with national security!""
""It became national security when three of those front companies attempted to buy land adjacent to the Buckley Space Force base radar installations,"" I said, stepping forward and looking directly at my father.
The pieces immediately snapped together in my mind. The anonymous tip to the police. The sudden hostility when I arrived. The desperate urge to get me away from the property before my gear was brought inside.
""You didn't call the police because of Tiffany's ridiculous livestream,"" I said, my voice hardening like tempered steel. ""You called them because you knew who I was, didn't you, Dad?""
My father didn't answer. He couldn't. His lower lip was trembling uncontrollably.
""Two weeks ago, our intelligence liaison sent a formal notification to your corporate legal team requesting access to your land development records,"" General Vance explained, leaning over the table. ""You knew Maya was in that unit. You thought if you got her arrested tonight for vehicle theft or civilian misconduct, you could file an ethics complaint, compromise her security clearance, and tie up the federal audit in bureaucratic appeals long enough to liquidate those offshore accounts.""
""Richard..."" my mother whispered, staring at her husband in horror. ""What did you do? You told me she was just coming home to ruin our party! You told me she was broke and needed money!""
""Shut up, Eleanor!"" my father hissed, his mask slipping completely. ""I did it for the family! Do you have any idea how much debt we're in? This house is mortgaged to the hilt! Brad's father was going to pull his investments if we couldn't clear the Buckley project! She was supposed to just get locked up in county jail for the weekend so I could sign the closing documents tomorrow morning!""
Tiffany stared at her father, tears smudging her mascara. ""Dad... you used me? You told me to livestream her so she’d be too humiliated to fight back...""
""You were useful, Tiffany,"" my father spat, desperation turning him vicious. ""All you care about is your stupid followers anyway!""
The silence in the room was deafening. The truth had arrived, and it was uglier than anyone could have imagined. My father hadn't just neglected me—he had actively tried to frame his own child to save his fraudulent empire.
I walked over to the table, picked up the pen I had restored for him, and unscrewed the cap. I signed my name on the federal authorization warrant in the file, then laid the pen down on the mahogany table.

""Grandpa would have despised you, Dad,"" I said quietly. ""He taught me that a real soldier protects the weak. You used your own children as human shields.""
General Vance signaled the two federal agents standing at the doorway. ""Richard Vance, you are being taken into federal custody under Title 18 of the United States Code for conspiracy to defraud the federal government and obstruction of an active military intelligence investigation. Cuff him.""
