Chapter 2 - Handcuffs and Champagne

The entire room went dead silent. The jazz quartet playing quietly in the corner abruptly ceased, the soft clinking of champagne flutes stopped, and forty wealthy suburbanites froze in place, staring at me.

""Tiffany, what did you do?"" I asked, my voice flat, devoid of panic.

""I protected our neighborhood and our family's safety,"" Tiffany declared proudly, flipping her phone camera around to capture the police officers stepping into the foyer. ""You showed up driving an unmarked, blacked-out government-plated vehicle that doesn't belong to any low-ranking enlisted grunt. And when I ran your full name through the basic public military registry online this morning, nothing came up. Your records are completely restricted or non-existent. Which means you’ve either gone AWOL, you stole that truck, or you’re lying about being in the service altogether to mooch off Dad’s wealth!""

My father stepped forward, his face flushed red with indignation, but not toward Tiffany. Toward me. ""Is this true? Did you bring stolen government property to my driveway on the night of our annual charity gala? Do you have any idea what kind of scandal this will cause for my firm?""

""Dad, if you would just let me explain—""

""I don't want your pathetic excuses!"" my father barked, gesturing aggressively toward the officers. ""Take her out of here, officers. If she committed a federal crime or stole military property, my family has zero association with her. We won't post bail. She made her bed.""

Officer Miller, the older of the two cops, walked toward me with a grim expression, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. ""Ma'am, please step away from the crowd, keep your hands visible, and turn around. We need to verify your identification and search your person.""

""Officer,"" I said, maintaining steady eye contact without making any sudden movements. ""My military identification card is inside my inner coat pocket. Under Department of Defense security clearance protocols, my service record is designated Level 4 restricted. If you run my standard Social Security number through a basic municipal database, it will return a red-flag security block. Call your precinct supervisor before you put those cuffs on me.""

Brad snorted loudly, taking a theatrical sip of his champagne. ""Listen to her! Level four restricted! She’s been watching too many action movies while peeling potatoes in the mess hall. Officer, she’s clearly delusional. Cuff her before she causes a scene in front of our guests.""

Officer Miller hesitated for a fraction of a second, unsettled by how calm my breathing was and how balanced my stance remained. But with half the local city council and corporate elite watching him, he felt compelled to take charge. He grabbed my left wrist, spun me around, and clicked the cold steel ratchet tightly around my wrist.

The crowd gasped in delighted shock. Several of my mother’s friends pulled out their own phones to snap pictures of the scandalous Vance daughter being hauled away in chains. Tiffany giggled on her livestream, narrating every second: ""You guys, you are literally watching justice in real time. My sister tried to scam our whole family with fake stolen army gear, and now she’s getting dragged away. Hit that share button!""

The second cuff snapped around my right wrist.

""Step outside, ma'am,"" Miller ordered, guiding me by the elbow toward the front door.

I didn't resist. I didn't struggle. I didn't scream or cry. I simply walked beside the officer out onto the front porch, feeling the brisk evening wind hit my cheeks. Five years of specialized training had conditioned my central nervous system to remain ice-cold under extreme tactical stress. Panic was a luxury for civilians.

Behind us, my mother followed onto the porch, clutching a cashmere wrap around her shoulders, yelling loud enough for the neighbors across the cul-de-sac to hear. ""Don't you ever come back here, Maya! You have dragged this family's good name through the mud for the last time! You are no daughter of mine!""

I turned my head slightly, looking back at her. ""Mom. Look at your watch.""

She blinked, startled. ""What?""

""Look at your watch,"" I repeated evenly. ""It’s 8:49. In two minutes, you are going to realize that some things are kept quiet not because they are shameful, but because the world isn't safe enough to know about them.""

May you like

Brad walked out onto the porch, laughing mockingly. ""Two minutes until what? Your imaginary squad shows up to rescue you?""

Before the words could fully leave his mouth, the asphalt at the end of the cul-de-sac began to vibrate.
