Chapter 7 - A Commander's Resolve

The heavy diesel engine of the command transport purred smoothly as we cruised down the highway toward Peterson Space Force Base. Through the tinted window, the distant glow of the Denver skyline shrank beneath the snow-capped silhouette of the Rocky Mountains.

Inside the vehicle, General Vance handed me a secure tablet displaying the live operational feed. ""Your unit executed the synchronized raid on three associated safe houses in Colorado Springs forty minutes ago. All twelve offshore servers were captured intact. No casualties on our side.""

""And the Buckley radar data?"" I asked.

""Completely preserved,"" he replied, taking a breath. ""If your father's partners had successfully closed that land purchase tomorrow, foreign intelligence assets would have had direct line-of-sight signal intercept capabilities into our orbital defense grid. You didn't just stop a corporate fraud scheme tonight, Maya. You prevented a catastrophic national defense compromise.""

I leaned my head back against the leather headrest, closing my eyes. The adrenaline that had carried me through the evening was slowly receding, leaving behind a heavy, hollow exhaustion.

""I’m sorry you had to see him like that, Thomas,"" I said quietly. ""Your brother.""

The General looked out the window into the black night. ""Richard chose his path a long time ago, Maya. When our father passed away, Richard forged the trust documents to push me out of the estate while I was leading a battalion in the Gulf War. He claimed I had abandoned the family for blood and dirt. He was always obsessed with appearances, status, and control. When you joined the military against his wishes, you didn't just choose a different career—you held up a mirror that showed him how cowardice really looked.""

""I just wanted them to understand why I did it,"" I whispered. ""Why Grandma’s values meant more to me than their country club.""

""They will never understand,"" General Vance said, placing a warm, heavy hand on my shoulder. ""People who spend their entire lives living behind masks will always hate anyone brave enough to walk through the fire without one. But look behind you, Colonel.""

I turned slightly and looked through the glass partition into the second row of the transport. Four battle-hardened operators from my specialized reconnaissance team sat in full tactical kit, checking their instruments and gear. When they saw me turn, each of them gave me a sharp, respectful nod of absolute devotion. Men and women who had bled with me in foreign mountains, who had trusted my orders with their lives, who would walk into hell and back if I gave the command.

""That is your family now, Maya,"" the General said softly. ""A family forged not by blood, but by blood shed for something greater than oneself.""

We pulled through the heavy concrete barricades of Peterson Base. The high-powered perimeter floodlights illuminated our convoy as gates swung open under maximum security protocols. Uniformed guards snapped salutes as we passed each checkpoint.

Over the next twenty-four hours, the fallout from the evening exploded across the state. Federal prosecutors unsealed a forty-count indictment naming my father, Brad's law firm, and six regional developers in a massive foreign corruption and money laundering conspiracy. The mansion was placed under federal asset forfeiture. Tiffany's sponsors cancelled their contracts en masse after the leaked livestream audio revealed her participating in the harassment of an active military officer.

My mother called my personal base extension twelve times. I didn't answer. I had spent five years being invisible to them. Now, it was their turn to live in the silence they had created.
