Chapter 6 - The Broken Ring

Sabrina looked down at the diamond ring sparkling on her left hand. It was a three-carat, platinum-set emerald cut—expensive, flashy, and designed to project absolute stability.
""You told me your ex-wife was emotionally unstable,"" Sabrina said, her voice eerily quiet amidst the tension. ""You told me she refused to work, that she had no ambition, and that she tried to ruin your reputation because she couldn't stand seeing you succeed.""
She turned her eyes toward me. For the first time, there was no rivalry in her gaze, only the sick realization of a woman who had been handed a script full of poison.
""Grace,"" Sabrina said, addressing me directly. ""What is your position with the trauma program?""
""I’m the Civilian Director of Regional Trauma and Tactical Medicine for the Northwest Interagency Command,"" I answered calmly. ""I oversee ninety-four flight medics, forty-eight emergency units, and coordinate medevac protocols across four states. The helicopter outside belongs to my unit's transport fleet. We were returning from a joint winter-rescue certification exercise in the Sawtooth range. The pilot happens to be a close friend whose daughter I treated two years ago. Dropping us here cost me half an hour of personal flight authorization.""
Sabrina let out a short, incredulous laugh. She turned back to Tristan, whose face had gone completely slack.
""She saves lives for a living,"" Sabrina whispered. ""She directs an entire regional network. And you told me she was sitting in a trailer park somewhere, stalking your social media.""
""Sabrina, listen to me—"" Tristan pleaded, reaching out for her forearm.
""Don't touch me,"" she snapped, stepping back with such force that her heel caught the edge of the hearth rug. She reached down, pulled the heavy platinum ring from her finger without hesitation, and dropped it into Tristan’s empty wine glass on the table. It landed with a sharp, hollow clink.
""Sabrina! No! This is insane! It's a misunderstanding from nearly a decade ago!"" Tristan shouted, panic finally making his voice crack.

""A misunderstanding is forgetting to pick up the dry cleaning, Tristan,"" Sabrina said coldly, gathering her designer clutch from the sofa. ""Abandoning four children and lying about it for eight years to protect your promotion board is sociopathic. I don't care how many medals you have pinned to your chest. You’re a coward.""
Without looking back, Sabrina walked straight toward the front entryway, her heels clicking rhythmically across the hardwood floor. The heavy oak front door opened, let in a gust of cold pine air, and shut with a finality that shook the room.
