Chapter 1 - The Arrival on the Ice

The thundering roar of twin turbine blades violently shook the pristine Idaho pine trees, whipping powdery snow into an impenetrable white vortex across the manicured lawns of the Holloway estate. Down below, framed against the warm amber glow of towering French windows, forty members of Sun Valley’s wealthiest socialites and decorated military brass stood frozen, champagne flutes halting mid-toast. At the center of the terrace stood Major Tristan Holloway, looking impeccably polished in his dress mess uniform, his arm possessively draped around Sabrina, whose designer emerald silk gown fluttered against the unexpected arctic downdraft.

Tristan’s jaw remained set in that familiar, arrogant tilt—a look I had endured through six years of our hollow marriage. In his meticulously calculated mind, this evening was supposed to be his ultimate psychological victory lap. He had invited me, his allegedly pathetic, bitter, ""childless"" ex-wife, to witness his glamorous new life, hoping I would drive up in a modest rental car, sit quietly in a shadowy corner, and silently accept that he had traded up.

Instead, a matte-black Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk bearing the official insignias of the regional emergency trauma flight unit touched down with breathtaking precision onto the snowfield. The side hydraulic door slide open with a heavy mechanical clunk.

I stepped onto the runner, wrapping my tailored wool winter coat tightly against the biting mountain wind, my boots sinking firmly into the pristine drift. For a second, Tristan took an involuntary step forward, a smug, patronizing smirk curling at the corners of his lips, preparing whatever rehearsed greeting of pity he had spent weeks drafting.

Then came the four boys.

One by one, bundled in matching navy thermal parkas, dark aviator sunglasses, and warm knitted caps, eight-year-old boys stepped out into the blinding snow. Mason led the line with his calm, measured stride, followed closely by Caleb, whose eyes darted around taking in the spectacle. Asher hopped down, immediately catching Liam by the sleeve to steady him on the slick ice. When they took off their sunglasses and pushed back their hood cuffs in unison, the breath seemed to rip straight out of the atmosphere.

They did not just resemble Tristan; they were four living, breathing, undeniable carbon copies of him at age eight. The exact same sharp, aristocratically defined Holloway jawline, the piercing steel-gray irises, the slight cowlick near the crown of their dark hair, and the unmistakable stoic posture that generations of Holloway men had carried through West Point graduation portraits.

Across the snow-swept patio, Tristan’s hand went limp. The crystal flute of vintage Dom Pérignon slipped from his fingers, tumbling through the freezing air before shattering against the flagstone terrace, splattering sparkling champagne across the hem of Sabrina’s pristine gown. Every trace of color drained from his face until his skin looked as gray as the winter sky above him. His chest heaved, his mouth opening and closing like a man starved of oxygen beneath an avalanche.

Beside him, his mother, Evelyn Holloway—a matriarch known throughout high society for her ruthless poise—clutched the pearls around her neck so tightly that the string threatened to snap. Her gaze darted from my face down to the four identical little boys standing quietly beside my boots, standing straight with the quiet discipline of kids raised around trauma medics and rescue pilots.

""Grace..."" Tristan whispered, his voice cracking beneath the fading whine of the helicopter’s cooling engines. The sound barely reached three feet, but in the dead silence of the Idaho mountains, it carried like a gunshot.

""Good evening, Tristan,"" I said, my voice completely steady, carrying effortlessly through the crisp evening air. ""You said you wanted to put the past behind us and gather the family for Christmas. Don't look so stunned. Mason, Caleb, Asher, Liam—say hello to the man who spent eight years telling the world that none of you existed.""
