Chapter 10 - Clear Skies Ahead

The twin turbines of the Sikorsky UH-60 spun up with a powerful, rhythmic beat, blowing fresh snow away from the black fuselage. As we climbed the steps into the warm, illuminated cabin, Crew Chief Dave gave the boys a crisp two-finger salute, handing each of them an aviation headset with a wide grin.

""Mission accomplished, Director?"" Dave asked over the intercom system as he latched the heavy cargo door shut.

""Mission accomplished, Dave. Take us home,"" I answered through the headset microphone.

The helicopter lifted smoothly off the Sun Valley snow, banking gracefully over the Holloway estate. Looking out the thick plexiglass window, I saw the great chalet illuminated against the dark Idaho mountains. Down on the terrace, two small figures stood beneath the exterior floodlights: Evelyn, standing tall and watching the aircraft climb into the starlight, and Tristan, sitting alone on the stone steps, head in his hands, surrounded by the shattered glass of his own grand illusions.

The boys were already chattering happily over the crew radio channel.

""Look at the lights on the ski runs!"" Asher pointed.

""That's Bald Mountain,"" Liam corrected, adjusting his headset. ""Elevation nine thousand one hundred and fifty feet.""

""I told you Liam memorized the whole map,"" Caleb laughed, leaning against Mason’s shoulder.

Mason sat quietly beside me, looking out into the vast, open expanse of the Idaho night sky. He reached over, slipping his small hand into mine and giving it a gentle squeeze.

""Mom?"" he asked.

""Yes, Mason?""

""You were right.""

""About what, honey?""

May you like

""We didn't need him at all,"" Mason said softly, his voice full of the quiet confidence of a boy who knew exactly where he belonged. ""We already have the best crew in the world.""

I smiled, pulling him close as the helicopter cleared the mountain ridge, leaving the shadows of the past behind us. Ahead lay the warm, steady lights of Boise—a home built not on titles, pride, or hollow reputations, but on fierce love, unshakeable truth, and a family that had survived the storm and come out stronger on the other side."
