Chapter 5 - An Unraveling Facade

Evelyn Holloway rose slowly from the floor. Her knees cracked faintly, but her gaze was laser-focused on her only son. The social matriarch who valued family legacy, aristocratic prestige, and military lineage above all else was staring at four healthy, brilliant male heirs to the Holloway name—heirs who had spent eight years without a single penny, a single phone call, or a single Christmas card from the family whose blood they carried.

""Eight years,"" Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a register so cold it silenced the room entirely. ""Eight years, Tristan. While you were vacationing in Aspen and buying sports cars to celebrate your medals, your sons were growing up sixty miles away.""

""Mother, you took my side!"" Tristan shouted, desperation finally breaking through his military composure. ""You told me she was clinging to my coat-tails! You agreed that cutting her off was the right thing to do!""

""Because I trusted you!"" Evelyn snarled, slamming her hand against the dining table with surprising force, causing the crystal glasses to chime. ""I trusted that my son was an officer and a gentleman! I trusted that you had basic human decency! You let me believe this woman was trying to swindle our family, while all along you abandoned four Holloway boys in an Idaho hospital!""

""Grace didn't need our money, clearly!"" Tristan blurted out, gesturing wildly toward the window where the flight crew of the Black Hawk was securing the aircraft on the lawn. ""Look at her! Flying in on tactical aircraft! She did this deliberately to humiliate me! She waited eight years just to blow up my engagement party!""

""Humiliate you?"" I stepped forward, stepping between Tristan and my children. My posture was straight, calm, commanding—the posture of a woman who ran chaotic emergency trauma bays where lives were saved by the second, not manufactured on parade grounds.

""Tristan, I didn't spend eight years thinking about you. I didn't spend eight years plotting your downfall. I was too busy working sixty-hour weeks directing trauma readiness, teaching flight medics how to stop arterial bleeds, and raising four boys who know how to respect people. When your email arrived, I was going to delete it. Do you know why I didn't?""

Tristan stared at me, his chest heaving, unable to find words.

""Because Mason asked me a question,"" I continued, gesturing toward my oldest. ""He asked if your family knew they existed. And I realized that by hiding from your petty little games, I was letting you write the history of our lives. You wanted me to show up here alone so you could feel superior? Here I am. And here are the sons you discarded like trash.""
