Chapter 8 - The Legal Reckoning

Julian didn't give Preston the chance to crawl any further. He stepped in front of me, his tall frame cutting off Preston’s pathetic view.
“You won't be fixing anything, Preston,” Julian said, his voice dropping into the icy, ruthless tone of a corporate titan preparing for liquidation. “And while we are discussing the truth, you should know that Marcus Vance isn't the only one who has been talking.”
Julian signaled toward the gate. A tall, impeccably dressed woman carrying a leather briefcase walked briskly down the garden path.
“Meet Sarah Jenkins,” Julian announced to the stunned backyard. “She is Audrey’s lead legal counsel, and the senior partner at Jenkins & Sterling Law.”
Sarah stopped beside Julian, opening her briefcase and extracting three thick manila folders bound with red legal tape.
“Mr. Holloway, Mrs. Holloway,” Sarah said formally, addressing both Preston and Cynthia. “Two hours ago, my firm officially filed a comprehensive multi-million-dollar civil lawsuit in Mecklenburg County Superior Court against Cynthia Holloway, Preston Holloway, and Dr. Arthur Vance.”
Cynthia snapped her head up, her wrinkled face twitching in pure terror. “A lawsuit? For what?! You have no right to sue a family for private domestic matters!”
“We are suing for intentional infliction of emotional distress, medical fraud, criminal conspiracy, and breach of fiduciary medical duty,” Sarah answered without missing a beat, her sharp voice echoing off the brick facade of the mansion.
“We have recovered the original, unredacted lab documents from the St. Jude Reproductive Institute archives through a court-ordered subpoena,” Sarah stated, holding up the notarized copies for all the guests to witness. “We also possess bank transfer records proving that Cynthia Holloway wired forty thousand dollars directly into an offshore account owned by Dr. Vance two days before Audrey Bennett was issued a fraudulent diagnosis of irreversible ovarian failure.”
Preston looked up at his mother, his jaw slacking in sheer horror. “Mother... you paid Vance? You knew? You knew all along?!”
Cynthia couldn't even speak. She buried her face in her lap, weeping in dry, agonizing gasps.
“Furthermore,” Sarah continued, turning her cold gaze toward Preston, “in our initial divorce settlement four years ago, Preston Holloway forced Audrey Bennett to forfeit her rightful half of the family real estate portfolio and sixty percent of the joint investment accounts, citing a fault clause regarding her failure to produce biological issue as stipulated in your prenuptial agreement.”
Audible gasps erupted from the crowd. The cruelty of what the Holloway family had done was sickening.
“Because that prenuptial fault clause was executed on the basis of deliberate medical fraud and falsified documentation,” Sarah concluded with a sharp smile, “we have filed an emergency motion to vacate the original divorce decree. We are demanding the full return of all forfeited marital assets, adjusted for four years of compounded interest, plus twenty million dollars in punitive damages.”

Preston looked at Sarah, then at Julian, the reality of complete financial and personal ruin crashing down upon his shoulders. “Twenty million? That... that would liquidate my entire real estate firm! I would lose the house! I would lose everything!”
“Then you better start packing, Preston,” Julian replied smoothly. “Because Audrey is taking back every single dime you stole from her dignity.”
