Chapter 4 - The Shattered Mirage

The accusation landed like a detonated bomb across the manicured lawn.
Dozens of heads snapped toward Cynthia Holloway. The matriarch of the Holloway family, who had spent decades reigning over local charity boards and country club committees with ruthless elegance, suddenly looked like a cornered animal.
“Audrey Bennett, how dare you!” Cynthia screeched, her voice shrill with panic. “You are making up slanderous lies because you couldn't keep my son happy! Security! Someone call the gate guard and have these trespassers removed!”
“Nobody is removing anyone, Cynthia,” Julian said calmly, reaching inside the breast pocket of his tailored jacket. He withdrew a sleek, folded document and held it between two fingers. “In fact, we anticipated that your family would try to rewrite history today. We didn't come here to cause a scene, but Audrey deserved to walk away with her dignity intact after the trap you laid for her.”
Brielle looked between Cynthia and Preston, the tears finally spilling over her mascara-streaked cheeks. “What lab report, Cynthia? What is he talking about? Preston told me Audrey had severe reproductive damage! He told me he was entirely fertile and that she was the broken one!”
“Brielle, honey, don't listen to this nonsense,” Cynthia urged, reaching out a trembling, manicured hand toward her pregnant daughter-in-law. “This woman is a lunatic. She’s trying to ruin your special day out of pure jealousy!”
“Jealousy?” I laughed, the sound cold and devoid of humor. “Brielle, four years ago, right before Preston filed for divorce, we underwent a final, extensive round of comprehensive fertility testing at the St. Jude Reproductive Institute. The doctors did full chromosomal panels and sperm viability analyses.”
Preston’s face shifted from crimson to an ashen, ghost-like gray. “Audrey, shut your mouth. Don't you dare speak about private medical history!”
“Why shouldn't I?” I fired back, stepping forward until I was only a few feet from where he stood cowering. “You had no problem discussing my body into a microphone five minutes ago! You announced to our friends and family that I was defective!”
The guests were completely frozen. Not a single person reached for an appetizer or moved to leave. The sheer gravity of the unraveling scandal pinned them to their chairs.
“The St. Jude Institute sent two copies of those final results,” I continued, my voice steady and unwavering. “One went to our home address, which Cynthia interceptively collected from the mailbox while I was working at my design studio. The second copy was supposed to be delivered to our private portal. But Dr. Vance, Preston’s childhood family physician who managed the fertility referrals, personally called me to report that my eggs were non-viable and that carrying a pregnancy was impossible.”
“And it was!” Preston yelled defensively, though his voice lacked conviction. “Dr. Vance gave me the exact same news!”
“No, Preston,” Julian interrupted, stepping up beside me and handing the folded document directly to Brielle. “Dr. Vance gave your mother the real report. And what Dr. Vance found was that Audrey was completely, perfectly healthy. She had zero fertility impediments.”

Brielle snatched the paper from Julian’s hand, her hands trembling so violently that the thick paper rattled.
“Read it, Brielle,” Julian said quietly. “Read the diagnosis of the man whose child you are currently carrying.”
