Chapter 5 - The Locked Mahogany Drawer

Brielle unfolded the document with wide, panicked eyes.
Preston lunged forward to snatch it from her grasp, but Julian effortlessly stepped into his path, blocking him with an immovable shoulder. “Let your wife read, Preston. Unless you're terrified of what's printed under your own social security number.”
“Brielle, give that to me!” Preston bellowed, his composure completely evaporating into frantic rage. “It’s a forgery! Julian Montgomery fabricated that to tear our marriage apart!”
Brielle looked down at the header. The official watermark of St. Jude Reproductive Institute was embossed deeply into the top corner. Her eyes scanned the bold lines, reading aloud in a breathy, horrified whisper:
“Patient Name: Preston Holloway. Diagnosis: Severe Azoospermia combined with congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens. Prognosis: Absolute biological sterility. Zero percent chance of natural conception.”
The backyard erupted into a chaotic symphony of gasps and frantic whispers. Several women stood up from their tables, clutching their pearls, while business associates of Preston exchanged shocked, wide-eyed glances.
“Zero percent?” Brielle choked out, her head snapping up to look at Preston. Her knuckles turned stark white as she pressed the paper flat against her round belly. “Absolute biological sterility? What does that mean? Preston, what does this mean?!”
Preston’s mouth opened and closed like a fish suffocating on dry land. Sweat beaded along his hairline, dripping down his temple. “Brielle... it's a mistake. It was a preliminary test! Vance told me it was just an anomaly!”
“Dr. Vance didn't call it an anomaly,” I said, turning my gaze toward Cynthia, whose face was completely drained of life. “Dr. Vance called it permanent. He told Cynthia that Preston was born sterile. But the Holloway family couldn't bear the shame of the community knowing their golden boy couldn't continue the family bloodline. Cynthia couldn't stomach the country club gossip.”
“So you blamed me,” I said directly to Cynthia. “You convinced Dr. Vance to fabricate an ovarian failure diagnosis for me. You let Preston believe his own lies, or perhaps he knew all along and gleefully used me as his scapegoat. You let him parade me through seven years of agonizing hormone injections, invasive exploratory surgeries, and emotional torment, all while knowing every single tear I cried was for a lie!”
“Audrey, please...” Cynthia wept, dropping her face into her trembling hands. The proud matriarch was utterly destroyed in front of her high-society peers.
“Wait,” Brielle whispered, her voice dropping into a register of sheer horror that made the entire garden fall silent once again. “If Preston has been sterile his entire life... if he had zero percent chance of ever fathering a child...”

Brielle looked down at her seven-month pregnant belly, then slowly raised her eyes to Preston’s terrified face.
“Then whose baby did your mother pay for me to carry?!”
