Chapter 6 - The Architect Of A Perfect Bloodline

Brielle’s scream pierced the afternoon air, shattering whatever remaining shreds of dignity the Holloway family possessed.

“What did you say?” Preston whispered, his eyes widening in complete, unadulterated madness. He grabbed Brielle by the upper arms, shaking her. “What did you just say, Brielle?! Who paid for what?!”

“Get your hands off her!” a loud voice shouted from the catering tent.

Pushing his way through the servers was Marcus Vance—the thirty-year-old son of Dr. Vance and Preston’s former college fraternity brother, who had been hired to coordinate the high-end beverage service for the event. Marcus rushed onto the lawn, stepping directly between Preston and Brielle, shoving Preston backward onto the turf.

“Don't touch her, Preston!” Marcus yelled, his chest heaving, his chef's apron stained with wine.

Preston stared up from the grass, looking between his sobbing wife, his trembling mother, and his former best friend. The pieces of an unimaginable puzzle were violently slamming together in his mind.

“Marcus?” Preston choked out, scrambling back to his feet like a madman. “Why are you defending my wife? Why was she talking about a paid pregnancy?!”

Brielle collapsed into a nearby chair, sobbing hysterically into her hands. The secret she had carried for months was breaking under the weight of Julian’s documents.

“Your mother came to me eight months ago, Preston!” Brielle wept openly, heedless of the fifty guests recording the disaster on their smartphones. “Three years after you divorced Audrey, you still couldn't get me pregnant! You were starting to panic, drinking heavily, throwing things, threatening to leave me because you thought I was broken just like you claimed Audrey was!”

Preston shook his head in violent denial. “No... no, no, no!”

“Cynthia pulled me aside into her private study,” Brielle continued through choking sobs. “She opened the mahogany desk. She showed me the St. Jude medical report that proved you were sterile! She told me you would lose your mind if you ever found out the truth. She said the Holloway trust fund required a biological heir within the next two years, or the estate would default to your distant cousins!”

The guests were murmuring loudly now. Several people stood near the fences, completely captivated by the grotesque unraveling of the family's pristine facade.

“Cynthia orchestrated it all!” Brielle screamed, pointing an accusatory finger at her mother-in-law. “She brought in Marcus! She paid him fifty thousand dollars and arranged for private intrauterine insemination at a clinic across state lines in Virginia! She told me we were keeping the family together! She told me Preston would never have to know, and that we would raise Marcus’s child as a Holloway!”

“You used my best friend?!” Preston roared, lunging toward Marcus with clenched fists.

Marcus ducked Preston’s clumsy punch easily, countering by grabbing Preston’s lapels and shoving him hard against the wooden railing of the deck. “Your mother begged my father to hide your sterility ten years ago, Preston! She ruined Audrey’s life to protect your fragile pride! And when you almost drove Brielle to suicide with your abuse, Cynthia paid off my medical school loans to give you an heir! I did it for the money, and she did it for her twisted vanity!”

Preston stood pinned against the railing, his breathing ragged, his eyes hollow. He looked like a man standing amid the smoking ruins of a city he had built on dry sand.

Then, his shattered gaze slowly drifted across the lawn, finally landing back on me and the two beautiful, healthy boys holding my hands.
