Chapter 7 - The Unmasking at Vance Capital

""This is a mistake!"" Anthony shouted, his voice cracking as the reality of armed federal agents standing in his private club began to sink in. ""My ex-wife orchestrated this! She's an independent defense consultant trying to manufacture leverage in our divorce settlement! You can't use military investigators for a domestic dispute!""
""Your ex-wife is not an independent defense consultant, Mr. Vance,"" Agent Hayes replied, unzipping a tactical case and producing a stack of red-stamped federal documents. ""Your ex-wife is Colonel Marissa Ward, active Director of Strategic Intelligence within the Joint Functional Component Command. Her operational stipends and government compensation accounts are classified defense assets protected under federal statutes. For five years, you and your mother have systematically siphoned, transferred, and converted federal property for personal use.""
Anthony's knees physically gave out. He grabbed the edge of the mahogany conference table to keep himself from collapsing onto the floor. ""Colonel? She's... she's a Colonel?""
Cross, the seasoned attorney, instantly stepped back, putting physical distance between himself and his client. ""Wait. If this involves active Title 10 military personnel and classified operational funds, standard domestic tort defenses are entirely inapplicable. Anthony, did you knowingly access accounts registered under a Department of Defense routing number?""
""I... I thought it was her corporate consulting account!"" Anthony stammered, sweat breaking out across his forehead. ""She never wore a uniform! She never went to a base! She never told me!""
""Colonel Ward's posting was a deep-cover strategic assignment coordinating national security logistics,"" Hayes continued remorselessly. ""Her cover was maintained with the full authorization of the Department of the Army. Your unauthorized access to her secure digital tokens breached federal firewalls. We are currently executing simultaneous warrants at your corporate headquarters on Wall Street, your mother’s Park Avenue residence, and the offices of Vance Capital Holdings.""
Eleanor let out a sharp, choked sob, sinking into her leather armchair. ""My residence? You have no right to touch my home! Everything in that apartment was bought with my son’s hard-earned money!""
""Every piece of jewelry, every artwork, and every luxury asset acquired via the secondary card registered to Colonel Ward has been inventoried and designated as proceeds of suspected grand larceny,"" Hayes said, signaling the federal agents. ""Officers, please escort Mr. Vance and Mrs. Vance to federal holding at Foley Square for immediate arraignment.""

As the handcuffs clicked around Anthony's wrists, the heavy metal cold against his skin, his mind flashed through every conversation, every argument, and every casual dismissal he had ever thrown at me. He remembered telling me that I was nothing without him. He remembered boasting that he held all the power, that he could crush my career with a single phone call, that I was simply a guest in his world.
Now, as he was led past staring club members, his hands cuffed behind his back, he realized the terrifying truth: he had never been the predator. He had merely been a reckless amateur playing games inside the perimeter of a commanding officer.
