Chapter 2 - The Audit of Arrogance

Anthony laughed, a dry, mocking sound meant to project dominance, but Eleanor looked genuinely repulsed by my refusal to cower. She marched directly past me into my living room, dropping her pristine designer tote onto my white sofa as if she still held sovereign authority over the property. Her eyes darted around the open-concept room, taking in the panoramic views of Central Park, visibly infuriated that this asset had remained entirely off-limits during our settlement negotiations.

""Listen to me, you ungrateful girl,"" Eleanor sneered, smoothing her silk blouse. ""You came from nothing. Some nameless military brat with zero connections, brought into a family with three generations of legacy. You lived in our shadow, enjoyed our prestige, and rode Anthony’s social standing into circles you never could have entered on your own. Paying my expenses was your privilege. It was your tuition for being allowed at our table.""

""Is that what you told yourself every time you charged thirty thousand dollars in jewelry to my accounts?"" I asked, remaining motionless by the dining table. ""Did you convince yourself that luxury watches and European spa retreats were charitable donations to your prestige?""

Anthony turned red, crossing his arms aggressively. ""Don’t lecture my mother about money, Marissa. You make a comfortable consulting salary because of the defense contracts my colleagues helped introduce you to. Without my network, you’d be writing memos in a windowless cubicle. You think that because the divorce court didn't divide this apartment, you hold all the leverage? I signed off on letting you keep this place because I didn’t want a drawn-out mess. But I can easily file an emergency motion for financial misconduct. I can freeze every single dollar you have.""

I opened the black binder and turned the first tab. ""Let’s talk about financial misconduct, Anthony. Between October of four years ago and last month, there were forty-seven wire transfers initiated from our joint household checking account into an offshore entity registered under the name of Vance Capital Holdings. Total value: two point four million dollars. Those transfers were executed using my private digital signature token, which you stole from my personal safe while I was away on an extended consulting trip in Germany.""

Anthony froze. The color drained from his ears, leaving them pale against his flushed face. ""What are you talking about? That was shared marital capital. We agreed to invest in that fund.""

""I agreed to nothing,"" I replied quietly. ""I noted the discrepancy within twenty-four hours of its occurrence. Furthermore, Eleanor’s supplementary platinum card wasn't just used for shopping. Over three years, she charged an aggregate sum of eight hundred and forty-two thousand dollars in personal travel, private dining, and boutique purchases. Under New York State law, sustained intentional misuse of an unauthorized secondary instrument constitutes grand larceny in the second degree.""

""You wouldn't dare,"" Eleanor hissed, though her voice lacked its previous venom. She reached for her bag, her fingers tightening around its strap. ""Anthony is a managing partner at one of the most prestigious investment houses in New York. If you file some fabricated claim, our legal counsel will bury you under counter-suits until you're bankrupt. Nobody will believe a low-level defense advisor over us.""

""You assume my advisors are civilian attorneys who trade favors at your country club,"" I said, a cold smile touching my lips. ""You assume I am operating within your system. You have four minutes left.""

May you like

Anthony sneered, recovering his composure with practiced smugness. ""You’re bluffing. You’ve always been timid, Marissa. You hide behind spreadsheets and quiet weekends because you know you don't belong in the real world. You want to play hardball? Fine. I’m calling the partners at your consulting firm this morning. Let’s see how much they value your confidentiality when I inform them that their senior advisor is a vindictive fraud who financially abuses her former in-laws.""

""Go ahead,"" I said softly. ""Make that phone call.""
