Chapter 3 - The Cold War in the Living Room

Anthony pulled out his phone, holding it up like a weapon, daring me to beg for quarter. He had used this exact method of intimidation for half a decade. Whenever I raised concerns about his extravagant spending or his mother’s insulting dismissals, he threatened to reach out to my alleged corporate employers, warning me that a scandal would destroy my delicate position in the defense sector. For five years, I had allowed him to believe his threats carried weight, purely because maintaining my operational cover took precedence over domestic squabbles.
""You really think you're untouchable, don't you?"" Anthony dialed a direct number, putting the call on speaker so his mother could witness my humiliation. ""Let's see what General Dynamics or North Carolina Defense Logistics has to say about their star contractor.""
The phone rang three times before an automated voice picked up: The number you have dialed is not in service or has been redirected to a secured routing hub.
Anthony frowned, staring at the screen. He redialed, this time entering the number listed on the public business card I had casually left in our home office years ago. The call connected instantly, but there was no cheery administrative greeting.
""Secure Terminal Four-Niner,"" a flat, monotone voice answered. ""Identify transmission code.""
Anthony blinked, clearly bewildered. ""Uh, yes. I’m looking for the managing director overseeing corporate accounts for Marissa Vance. I am her former spouse, and I have urgent information regarding personal fraud and unauthorized accounting practices.""
There was a profound three-second pause on the line. Then the voice responded with surgical indifference: ""This line is a restricted Department of the Army telecommunications routing node. Unlawful attempts to access or disrupt strategic communications are subject to federal prosecution under Title 18 of the United States Code. This call is being traced, logged, and transferred to the Provost Marshal's investigative desk. State your full legal name and location.""
Anthony stared at the device as if it had caught fire. He abruptly severed the connection, his breath coming faster. ""What the hell was that? What kind of sick game are you playing, Marissa? Did you pay some actors to set up a fake answering service to scare me?""
""You never listened to me, did you?"" I asked, walking over to the window. ""In five years, you never once asked about the details of my work. You never asked why my trips overseas had no fixed commercial flight itineraries. You never wondered why my security clearance paperwork required federal couriers rather than certified mail. You simply looked at the monthly deposits, assumed I was an overpaid civilian functionary, and decided my money belonged to you.""
Eleanor rose from the couch, her face twisted in disgust. ""Stop talking in riddles, girl! You owe us an apology, you owe my account full reimbursement, and you will pay for the psychological distress you caused me yesterday! Anthony, stop listening to her fairy tales and call the police. Tell them she's holding our funds hostage!""
""Call them, Eleanor,"" I invited, turning to face her with my hands resting loosely behind my back in a textbook military parade rest. ""Tell the NYPD that your ex-daughter-in-law won't let you use her credit card. Tell them you’ve been spending funds drawn against an active-duty military salary and a classified operational stipend. Let’s see which federal agency arrives first.""

Anthony stepped between us, his chest heaving. ""You’re lying. You’re an analyst. A consultant. You don’t have rank. You don’t have power. You're trying to bluff your way out of a lawsuit, but it won't work. By noon today, I will have an injunction freezing every asset you hold in this city. You will beg me to let you pay my mother's card.""
""Your five minutes are up,"" I said, my voice dropping to a register that finally made Anthony take half a step backward. ""Now, get out of my home before I have you removed in federal custody.""
