Chapter 4 - The Screen Goes Dark

The silence in the Pierre ballroom was so complete that the hum of the air conditioning sounded like an industrial fan.
Marcus stared at the giant display, his jaw dropping open as two hundred of the country’s most powerful investors turned their eyes toward him.
On the screen, a certified legal cease-and-desist order was laid out in high-resolution detail.
Case Ref: Sterling Trust v. Thorn Logic Inc.
Core Patent Portfolio #8,892,104 — Revoked Effective 11:23 AM EST.
Status: Unauthorized Use of Proprietary Encryption Architecture.
Gavin Roark’s glass shattered on the parquet floor, spattering vintage champagne across the toes of his polished oxford shoes.
"What is that?" Gavin choked out, his eyes bulging behind his wire-rimmed glasses.
"Marcus, what patent is that?!"
Marcus didn't answer; his fingers were shaking so badly that he dropped his phone onto the cocktail table.
The screen lit up with eighteen frantic notifications from Thorn Logic’s chief technology officer, David Chen.
Marcus snatched the phone, stabbing the speaker button with his thumb.
"David! What the hell is happening to the ballroom feed?!" Marcus hissed, turning his back on the staring crowd.
David’s voice exploded through the phone, ragged, hyperventilating, and drowned out by the blaring sirens of their downtown server facility.
"Marcus! The master encryption keys just expired!" David screamed over the static.
"Our entire client network—the Department of Defense logistics line, the European banking gateways, the retail clouds—it's all shutting down!"
"What do you mean shutting down?!" Marcus roared, sweat breaking out across his forehead, ruining his stage makeup.
"We own the core software! I wrote the algorithms!"
"You didn't write the core transport architecture, Marcus!" David yelled back in pure panic.
"Sera’s trust owns the foundational patents! They were licensed to us under an exclusive spousal maintenance agreement!"
"The license terminated forty minutes ago, and an automated kill-switch executed from a remote server in Monaco!"
"Our servers are completely bricked until we enter the new proprietary authorization keys!"
Chloe stepped back, her hand flying to her mouth, her glamorous facade instantly dissolving into raw terror.
"Marcus... what is he talking about? You told me you owned everything!"
Marcus felt the room spin violently around him.
The confident, swaggering titan who had lectured Wall Street on independence ten minutes earlier was suddenly suffocating on his own breath.
A reporter from Bloomberg News pushed through the stunned circle of investors, thrusting a smartphone toward Marcus's face.
"Mr. Thorn! Are you aware of the breaking story published by Reuters five minutes ago?!" the reporter demanded loudly.
"Vance Global Holdings has just announced an emergency hostile tender offer for all outstanding shares of Thorn Logic!"
"They are operating from the super-yacht Valkyrie in Monte Carlo alongside your former wife, Sera Sterling!"
"They are claiming Thorn Logic is in technical default of eighty million dollars in preferred debt!"
The ballroom erupted into chaotic shouting.
Three venture capitalists immediately pulled out their phones, yelling at their traders to dump Thorn Logic pre-IPO allocations at any price.
Marcus stared at the Bloomberg headline glowing on the reporter’s screen.
Accompanying the article was a high-resolution photograph taken an hour earlier on the aft deck of the Valkyrie.
There was Julian Vance, dressed in pristine linen, looking powerful and serene against the backdrop of the Monaco cliffs.
And sitting beside him, holding a crystal glass of champagne with an expression of effortless, untouchable elegance, was me.
