Chapter 3 - The New York Gala

Seven thousand miles away in Manhattan, Marcus Thorn was having the absolute best afternoon of his adult life.
The Pierre Hotel’s grand ballroom was packed with venture capitalists, financial journalists, and tech influencers for the annual Silicon Alley Summit.
Marcus stood on the center stage wearing a bespoke Tom Ford tuxedo, holding a wireless microphone with the confident ease of a conquering king.
On the massive digital projection screens behind him, the blue-and-gold logo of Thorn Logic rotated majestically beside the slogan: Architecture for Tomorrow.
Sitting in the front row, wearing a glittering gold couture gown, was Chloe Adams.
She clapped enthusiastically every time Marcus delivered a punchline about legacy businesses being crushed by modern visionaries.
"They told us a startup from a Brooklyn garage couldn't challenge IBM," Marcus projected to the cheering crowd, pacing the stage with practiced charisma.
"They told us that enterprise security required old money, old boards, and decades of committee approvals."
"We proved that one man with a clear vision can rewrite the rules of global logistics."
"And next month, when Thorn Logic rings the opening bell on the New York Stock Exchange, we are going to show Wall Street what true independence looks like!"
The applause roared through the ballroom, champagne glasses clinking as flashbulbs strode across Marcus’s smiling face.
He stepped off the stage into a swarm of investors eager to secure pre-IPO allocations.
Gavin Roark, his corporate attorney, hurried through the crowd, holding two flutes of vintage Cristal.
"Incredible speech, Marcus," Gavin beamed, handing him a glass.
"Goldman Sachs just requested another forty million in private placement tranches. Everyone wants a piece of this."
"I told you, Gavin," Marcus chuckled, clinking his glass against his lawyer's.
"You cut the dead weight loose, and the ship rises instantly."
"Sera was terrified of risk. She would have spent three weeks analyzing the compliance risks of this listing."
"Speaking of Sera," Gavin murmured, lowering his voice slightly as Chloe stepped over to join them,
"Did she take the car service to her sister's house in Queens?"
Marcus took a slow, arrogant sip of champagne, recalling the Maybach at the curb.
"She probably hired an executive ride for one hour to save face in front of the building staff," Marcus sneered.
"Let her have her little moment of pride. She walked away from four hundred million dollars without asking for a dime of equity."
"She'll be living in an outer-borough two-bedroom by Christmas, regretting the day she signed that paper."
Chloe wrapped her manicured hand around Marcus's bicep, pressing herself against his side with a dazzling, predatory smile.
"Don't waste another second thinking about the past, Marcus," Chloe purred.
"Tonight is about our future. We are the new power couple of New York tech."
Marcus grinned down at her, raising his glass to accept another toast from a passing hedge fund manager.
Suddenly, the massive digital presentation screen behind the stage flickered violently.
The rotating Thorn Logic logo vanished, replaced by a blinding, stark white screen bearing a single legal banner from the United States Patent and Trademark Office:
NOTICE OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY REVOCATION & EX PARTE INJUNCTION.

Every conversation in the grand ballroom died in an instant.
Marcus froze, his champagne flute hovering inches from his lips as his personal cell phone began vibrating uncontrollably against his hip.
