Chapter 2 - The Floating Fortress

The Gulfstream G650 touched down on the tarmac of Nice Côte d'Azur Airport just as the Mediterranean sun was rising over the glistening turquoise water.

A private helicopter transfer carried Evelyn Hart and me directly across the sparkling bay to the port of Hercules in Monaco.

Moored at the central deep-water quay was the Valkyrie, a three-hundred-foot custom mega-yacht that looked more like a sleek naval destroyer than a pleasure craft.

Her dark-gray hull cut an imposing silhouette against the pale limestone cliffs of Monte Carlo, surrounded by private security tenders and discreet radar domes.

Julian Vance stood waiting on the teak aft deck, wearing a crisp white linen shirt, dark trousers, and no shoes.

At thirty-six, Julian was the youngest sovereign fund manager in Europe, a man whose quiet investment decisions moved national bond markets before breakfast.

He possessed a sharp, aristocratic jawline, eyes the color of winter flint, and a reputation for absolute, surgical ruthlessness in corporate takeovers.

Yet as I stepped off the gangway, his expression softened into a rare, genuine smile.

"Welcome home, Sera," Julian said, taking my travel bag with his own hands and motioning for the chief stewardess to bring fresh citrus water.

"Did Marcus give you any theatrics at the closing?"

"He offered me the Connecticut condo and told me not to make things difficult," I laughed, taking a long, rejuvenating sip of iced water.

"He laughed when I declined spousal maintenance."

Julian shook his head, a cold, sardonic chuckle rumbling in his chest.

"A man who confuses silence with surrender deserves every single avalanche coming his way."

He led Evelyn and me into the main salon, where panoramic floor-to-ceiling glass overlooked the glittering harbor.

Spread out across a massive slab of petrified wood that served as the conference table were forty bound copies of Thorn Logic's corporate charter.

Beside them lay the original patent licenses granted ten years ago by the Sterling Maritime Trust.

"Marcus has spent the last forty-eight hours celebrating in New York," Evelyn said, opening her briefcase and aligning her tablets.

"He held a press conference yesterday morning announcing that Thorn Logic was initiating a secondary public offering at a five-hundred-million-dollar valuation."

"He told the Wall Street Journal that his divorce was an amicable, minor personal adjustment with zero impact on operational continuity."

Julian sat at the head of the table, his fingers lightly tapping the glossy prospectus Marcus had issued to the SEC.

"He is using our Series B covenants as collateral to underwrite the IPO syndicate," Julian noted, his eyes narrowing into cold calculation.

"Under Clause 14 of our financing agreement, Vance Global holds the right to demand immediate redemption of all preferred stock if Thorn Logic loses access to its core operating patents."

"And those patents belong entirely to Sera's maternal trust," Evelyn confirmed with a professional smirk.

"Marcus never owned them," I added quietly, looking out at the French Riviera.

"He had a ten-year permissive license that terminated automatically upon the dissolution of our marriage."

"He signed the divorce papers yesterday at eleven-twenty-two AM."

"The grace period for renewal expired twenty-four hours later."

Julian looked at his watch, then turned his gaze toward me with an intensity that made my pulse jump.

"It is currently eleven-thirty in New York, Sera."

"Your marriage is legally dissolved, the patent license has officially lapsed, and Thorn Logic is currently running pirate software on four thousand client servers."

"Shall we invite the press to lunch?"
