Chapter 8 - The Paper Trail Of Greed

Thomas placed a thick stack of bank statements, audited spreadsheets, and court injunctions onto a wooden workbench.
""When Gene came to me in secret two months ago, he could barely whisper,"" Thomas explained, adjusting his glasses. ""His physical therapist in Fargo happened to be my niece. She noticed that Connie was deliberately canceling his speech sessions and drugging him with heavy sedatives before family visits to make him appear cognitively destroyed.""
A cold shudder ran down my spine. ""She was drugging him?""
""Mild sedatives prescribed for anxiety, yes,"" Thomas confirmed grimly. ""Just enough to make him sluggish, slurred, and incapable of defending himself. Connie wanted him locked in a state-run nursing home by Thanksgiving. She had already signed preliminary admission paperwork for a cut-rate facility two hundred miles away.""
Jake slammed his fist against the workbench, his knuckles white. ""That monster. What about the money?""
""That’s where her greed became her undoing,"" Thomas said, tapping a red line on a financial audit. ""Connie believed Gene kept all his money in their joint checking account. When he had his stroke, she immediately drained ninety-two thousand dollars from that account, buying luxury goods, designer clothes, and transferring funds to a private account in the Cayman Islands.""
Thomas smiled—a sharp, predatory smile of a seasoned trial lawyer.
""What Connie didn't know is that your mother Martha had established an irrevocable family trust thirty years ago,"" Thomas continued. ""Gene’s commercial properties, his workshop, the family home, and his primary retirement portfolio—worth over two point four million dollars—were tied strictly to that trust. The moment Connie filed fraudulent conservatorship papers, she triggered an automatic audit clause Martha had written into the agreement.""
I stared at Thomas, completely overwhelmed. ""My mother protected him?""
""Martha knew human nature better than anyone,"" Thomas nodded gently. ""And yesterday morning, while Connie thought she was getting dressed for a wedding she intended to ruin, the sheriff’s department froze every single one of Connie’s personal and business accounts. We seized her car, her jewelry, and the deed to the beach house she secretly bought in Florida with Gene's stolen money.""
""Where is she now?"" Jake asked, his jaw tight.

""At this very moment? She’s sitting in the county jail,"" Thomas answered smoothly. ""She tried to access an ATM in town after fleeing the church. Her cards were flagged. When the local deputy approached her vehicle, she assaulted an officer and tried to destroy financial records in her glove box. She’s facing felony charges of grand theft, elder abuse, wire fraud, and assaulting an officer.""
Thomas turned to me, his expression softening into deep affection. ""Gene didn't just survive, Haley. He outsmarted her. He spent his recovery fighting to ensure that when he took his life back, he took back everything that belongs to you and your future family.""
