Chapter 4 - The Unmasking At The Altar

Pastor Miller cleared his throat, adjusting the paper under the warm altar lights.
""To my beloved daughter Haley,"" Pastor Miller read aloud, his voice steady and solemn. ""For eight months, I have been trapped inside a body that refused to obey my will, forced to watch a stranger dismantle our family from the inside. Today, on your wedding day, I take back my life, my honor, and my promise to you.""
A dead, suffocating hush smothered the chapel. You could hear Connie’s shallow, panicked breathing from where she stood frozen in the center aisle.
""Upon suffering my stroke,"" the affidavit continued, ""Connie Miller petitioned the county court for emergency conservatorship under fraudulent pretenses, claiming I was in a permanent vegetative state. She subsequently drained my personal business savings, liquidated my late wife Martha’s heirloom jewelry, and diverted fifty thousand dollars into an offshore shell account registered in her maiden name.""
""That's a lie! That's a slanderous lie!"" Connie screamed, completely abandoning her polished facade. She lunged toward the altar, her face contorted in a mask of pure rage. ""He’s legally incompetent! He has dementia! That document isn't worth the paper it’s printed on!""
From the fourth row, a tall, imposing man in a charcoal three-piece suit stood up calmly. It was Thomas Vance, the county attorney himself.
""I wouldn't take another step forward if I were you, Connie,"" Thomas declared, his deep voice carrying effortless legal authority. ""For the past six weeks, Gene has been secretly undergoing independent cognitive and neurological evaluations at the University Medical Center in Minneapolis. Not Fargo, where you thought you were dropping him off. While you sat in coffee shops shopping online, Gene was working with speech pathologists, physical therapists, and forensic accountants.""
The sanctuary erupted into pandemonium. Guests turned in their seats, whispering furiously, pointing, and shaking their heads in disgust.
Thomas Vance stepped into the aisle, blocking Connie's path. ""Gene has been certified completely lucid and legally competent by three independent board-certified neurologists as of last Friday. A county judge signed the revocation of your power of attorney yesterday morning at nine o'clock. You have no legal authority over Gene, his property, or his money. In fact, Connie, you are under active investigation for grand larceny and elder exploitation.""
Connie’s face turned from pale white to a mottled, furious purple. She looked around the church, desperately searching for an ally among the guests, but met only icy glares, open contempt, and absolute condemnation.
""You ungrateful old cripple!"" Connie shrieked at my father, her voice echoing grotesquely off the sacred stained glass. ""I wiped your chin! I drove you to your appointments! You were nothing without me!""

Dad didn't flinch. He didn't drop his gaze. With calm, unyielding dignity, he looked his abusive wife in the eye and said three clear words:
""Get... out... now.""
