Chapter 3 - The Secret Inside The Bible

A collective, audible gasp swept across the sanctuary like a tidal wave. Several women in the third row burst into open weeping, while Jake’s father stood up, clapping his hands over his mouth in sheer disbelief. Dad had not spoken a complete sentence to anyone in his hometown since January.

Connie jerked backward in her pew as if she had been struck across the face by an invisible hand. Her face drained of all color, turning a sickly shade of ash gray. Her knuckles turned white around the clasp of her purse.

Tears spilled over my lashes, hot and uncontrollable, washing away months of quiet exhaustion and grief. ""Dad,"" I sobbed, dropping to my knees beside his wheelchair and burying my face into his shoulder.

Dad didn't just stop at those two words. With agonizing slowness, his trembling left arm reached inside the breast pocket of his dark suit jacket. He pulled out a worn, leather-bound pocket New Testament—the very Bible my late mother had given him on their tenth wedding anniversary, thirty years ago.

He didn't hand it to me. He extended it toward Pastor Miller.

""Read,"" Dad forced out, the syllable thick, strained, but undeniably coherent. ""Read... now.""

Pastor Miller looked bewildered, glancing from Dad to me and then over to Connie. Connie suddenly sprang from her seat, her high heels clicking loudly against the polished hardwood floor.

""Pastor, please, Gene is confused and overstimulated!"" Connie cried out, her voice shrill and laced with panic. ""He doesn't know what he's doing! Let's get him back to his room before he suffers another medical emergency!""

""Sit... down!"" Dad barked.

The command was ragged, but the authority behind it was absolute. It was the voice of the master craftsman who had run construction crews for thirty-five years. Connie froze in the center aisle, her mouth hanging open, utterly paralyzed by the shock of hearing her supposedly incapacitated husband command her.

Pastor Miller gently took the worn leather Bible from Dad's hand. As he opened the weathered cover, a thick, pristine legal envelope fell from between the pages, landing softly at the pastor's feet.

Jake bent down, picked up the envelope, and handed it to the pastor. Written across the front in my father’s unmistakable, shaky, left-handed scrawl was a single name: HALEY.

""Open it, Pastor,"" Jake said quietly, his protective arm wrapping around my trembling shoulders.

Pastor Miller slid his finger beneath the sealed flap and extracted a folded document alongside an official cashier's check. As the pastor's eyes scanned the legal header, his eyebrows shot up in profound astonishment.

""This is an official affidavit of financial restoration,"" Pastor Miller announced to the entire congregation, his voice amplified by the pulpit microphone. ""Dated yesterday afternoon, witnessed and notarized by County Attorney Thomas Vance.""

A murmur of shock erupted through the church. Thomas Vance was the most respected, iron-clad probate lawyer in the entire state—and a lifelong friend of my father.

""Go on, Pastor,"" Dad whispered, his chin trembling with unspillable pride. ""Tell... her.""
