Chapter 6 - The Dinner At The Country Club

The next evening, the coastal rain cleared, leaving behind a crisp, starry sky over the Outer Banks.

I put on an emerald-green tailored suit, diamond stud earrings, and five-inch Louboutin heels.

If my family wanted to treat my life like a high-stakes corporate takeover, I was going to show them exactly how a CEO handles a hostile board meeting.

I drove my vintage Porsche straight to the front valet of the Cape Fear Yacht & Country Club.

This was Dad’s sacred temple, the private sanctuary where he spent three afternoons a week smoking cigars and pretending to be a self-made titan of industry.

I walked through the mahogany double doors of the dining room at 7:30 PM, right in the middle of the prime dinner service.

The room was filled with the town’s wealthiest residents: doctors, federal judges, city council members, and bank executives.

Dad was sitting at his usual corner table, surrounded by three of his golfing buddies, including Judge Arthur Harrison.

Dad was holding court, waving his wine glass as he talked, clearly unaware that his daughter had just walked into the room.

The dining room quieted as I approached the table, my heels clicking sharply against the polished herringbone hardwood floor.

Dad looked up, his smug smile freezing instantly.

"Kendall?" he choked out, spilling a few drops of cabernet onto the white linen tablecloth. "What are you doing here?"

"I came to settle our family account, Dad," I announced in a clear, carrying voice that turned every head in the dining room.

Judge Harrison stood up abruptly, his face dark with embarrassment.

"Richard, what is the meaning of this? My wife said your daughter threatened her with a federal subpoena yesterday!"

"Sit down, Arthur," I said, looking the judge directly in the eye. "Before you embarrass yourself further."

I pulled Dad’s leather ledger out of my designer handbag and dropped it right onto the center of the table, knocking over a bread basket.

"This is my father's private booking record," I told the entire surrounding room.

"It details forty-eight illegal cash transactions totaling over two hundred thousand dollars, using my private beachfront estate without my knowledge or consent."

The silence in the dining room was absolute; you could hear the ice melting in the cocktail glasses.

Dad scrambled to grab the book, his hands trembling violently.

"You're making a scene! Give me that! That's private property!"

"No, Dad, that's State's Exhibit A," I said smoothly.

"And I've already delivered digital copies to the IRS Criminal Investigation Division and the State Board of Judicial Ethics."

Judge Harrison went pale as a sheet and grabbed his jacket, bolting out of the dining room without saying another word.

The other club members stared at my father with utter contempt, whispering behind their cloth napkins.

Dad looked up at me, his eyes bloodshot and pleading for the first time in his life.

May you like

"Kendall... please. You're destroying my reputation."

"You destroyed it yourself, Richard," I replied coldly. "When you decided to treat your daughter like a mark."
