Chapter 5 - Mom’s Desperate Plea

The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the North Carolina coastline in bloody shades of crimson and violet.
Kyle was currently sitting in a holding cell at the county jail, unable to make the ten-thousand-dollar bail because every account tied to his name was frozen solid.
My phone rang again.
It was Mom.
I let it ring until it went to voicemail, but five seconds later, her face popped up on my front gate security intercom.
She was standing outside the iron bars, crying without an umbrella as a light evening drizzle began to fall.
I walked out to the courtyard, keeping the heavy wrought-iron gate locked between us.
"Kendall, please," Mom wept, gripping the black bars. "You have to help us. They won't let Kyle out of jail, and Melissa is having a complete nervous breakdown at the resort!"
"You forged my utility statements, Mom," I said through the gate.
Her tears stopped abruptly, caught in her throat.
"I... I did what any mother would do," she whispered defensively. "Your sister was facing foreclosure! They were going to lose their house, Kendall!"
"And instead of telling me the truth like an adult, you organized an illegal vacation scam using my home?"
"You never share anything with us!" Mom suddenly shrieked, dropping her remorseful act like an old coat.
"You sit out here in your glass palace on the beach, living like royalty, while the rest of your family struggles to pay for groceries! It isn't fair!"
"I worked eighty hours a week for twelve years while Melissa quit four jobs because she didn't like waking up early," I countered, my voice steady and cold.
"I skipped vacations, lived in studio apartments, and ate ramen so I could build my business. You called me obsessive and told me I was wasting my life."
Mom glared at me through the bars, her face twisting with bitter resentment.
"Your father and I gave you life! You owe us!"
"I don't owe you a single cent," I answered quietly.
"And if you don't step away from this gate in thirty seconds, the county sheriff is going to add you to Kyle’s indictment for conspiracy to commit identity theft."
Mom took a step back, her eyes wide with shock.
She realized for the first time in thirty-four years that her favorite daughter wasn't going to be rescued, and her emotional manipulation had finally hit an impenetrable concrete wall.
"Your father will never forgive you for this," she hissed into the rain.

"Good," I replied. "Because I will never forgive him either."
I turned my back on her and walked through the heavy front doors, locking every deadbolt behind me.
