Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail

The heavy front door clicked shut behind the deputy, and silence washed over my living room like a clean ocean wave.
I leaned against the wall, taking my first full breath since ten-thirty the previous night.
Through the panoramic front windows, I watched the luxury shuttle rumble down the private gravel drive, flanked by the deputy's patrol cruiser.
Melissa was pressed against the tinted glass, screaming into her cell phone, while Dad sat stiff as a statue in the passenger seat.
I didn't celebrate, and I didn't waste time crying.
I picked up my phone and dialed Carter Vance, my lead corporate attorney and longtime friend. He answered on the second ring, sounding wide awake despite the early hour.
"Tell me you didn't have to tase your brother-in-law," Carter said dryly.
"Worse," I answered, walking into my ransacked kitchen and dumping out Melissa's sticky wine glasses. "She illegally sublet my villa on Airbnb for eighty grand."
Carter let out a low, appreciative whistle.
"That's bold. Extremely stupid, but definitely bold."
"I need every listing pulled within the hour," I said, scrubbing the quartz counter until it gleamed. "And I want a formal forensic audit of how she got my deed verification details."
"She couldn't have verified the listing without utility bills or a forged lease agreement," Carter pointed out.
My hands stopped on the sponge.
A cold sensation crept up the back of my neck as the puzzle pieces clicked into place.
Last Thanksgiving, my mother had volunteered to watch my mail while I spent three weeks speaking at tech conferences in Tokyo.
When I returned, she claimed a bundle of water bills and property tax statements had been accidentally delivered to her house.
"Mom," I whispered.
"What was that?" Carter asked.
"My mother stole my identity documents six months ago," I said, my voice hardening. "She gave them to Melissa."
"Kendall, if your mother signed fraudulent lease documents in your name, that crosses from family squabble into state wire fraud."
"I don't care anymore, Carter. Subpoena the Airbnb host profile, freeze the payout accounts, and file a formal cease-and-desist against Kyle's construction LLC."
"On it," Carter said. "Lock your deadbolts and get some sleep."
I hung up, but sleep was the last thing on my mind.
I walked into the guest room Melissa had occupied and stripped the bed, tossing the sheets straight into the trash can outside.
As I pulled open the bedside drawer to check for left-behind junk, I found a leather notebook embossed with my father's initials.
Inside was a handwritten calendar mapping out the entire upcoming summer.
Every single week had a family name, a rental fee, and a percentage cut marked in red ink next to Dad’s handwriting.

They hadn't just listed my home online.
My parents had turned my dream retreat into an illegal family syndicate, marketing my private sanctuary to their wealthy country club friends behind my back.
