Chapter 10 - Sunrise On The Dunes

One year after the morning Melissa banged on my bedroom door demanding eggs and toast, the sun rose over North Carolina in a blaze of brilliant gold.

It was 5:00 AM, my favorite hour of the day.

I walked down my back steps in my silk robe—freshly dry-cleaned and smelling of lavender—holding a steaming mug of dark roast coffee.

The tide was low, leaving behind smooth, reflective flats of wet sand that mirrored the pink and amber clouds above.

Walking beside me was Barnaby, an eight-month-old golden retriever puppy I had adopted from the local coastal shelter. He bounced happily through the foam, chasing ghost crabs into the dunes before racing back to lick my bare ankles.

I sat down on a piece of smooth driftwood near the water's edge, letting the cool ocean foam wash over my feet.

My phone stayed inside on the kitchen counter, completely silent.

My software investments were flourishing, my charitable foundation had funded three local marine conservation projects, and my calendar belonged entirely to me.

There were no uninvited guests banging on my doors.

No relatives treating my hard work like an open buffet.

No toxic expectations dragging me down into generational guilt.

Just the vast, unending blue horizon and the quiet life I had bled, fought, and sacrificed to build for myself.

Barnaby flopped down on the sand beside my knees, resting his heavy chin across my feet with a contented sigh.

I stroked his soft golden ears, taking a warm sip of coffee as the morning sun broke over the water, warming my face with its clean, pure light.

I had learned that blood doesn't make a family; respect, honesty, and peace do.

And as long as I had the tide, the sunrise, and the strength to hold my own boundaries, my paradise would never be stolen again.
