Chapter 5 - The Financial Guillotine

Evelyn turned on her heel and strode out the front door, slamming it so hard the transom glass rattled overhead. Through the side window, I watched her luxury sedan back out of the driveway at high speed, spraying wet gravel across the lawn before vanishing down the tree-lined suburban road.

My phone erupted into a chorus of frantic chimes.

Rebecca rushed to my side as I unlocked the screen. There were seventeen missed calls from my business partner, Marcus, and an urgent calendar invitation titled: Emergency Executive Session - Immediate Attendance Required.

""She wasn't bluffing,"" I said, running a trembling hand through my hair.

I logged into my corporate email. A massive PDF file had been distributed to every senior managing director at my private equity firm. Attached were forged wire transfers bearing my digital signature, showing a drain of four million dollars from an institutional client account into an offshore shell entity registered under my name in Grand Cayman. It was an exceptionally sophisticated frame job—the kind that takes forensic accountants weeks to unravel, but takes a board of directors five minutes to suspend an executive over.

""This is ruinous,"" Rebecca murmured, scrolling through the attachments on her tablet. ""David, this is designed to paralyze your liquidity. If your assets are frozen during an investigation, Evelyn’s lawyers will walk into court on Monday morning and claim you cannot provide basic shelter or medical care for Lucy. They will ask for an emergency foster placement—and guess who is the nearest, wealthiest relative willing to step in?""

""Claire knew this would happen,"" I said, a sudden realization cutting through the rising panic.

I pulled out Claire’s hard drive again. ""In the video, Claire told me to treat Evelyn like a predator in a corner. She didn't just record a message; she left folders. Encrypted archives.""

I opened the folder titled Audit Trails. Inside was a ledger that Claire had secretly compiled during her final days with the help of a forensic accountant in Zurich. Every offshore company Evelyn claimed I owned was actually cross-referenced with bank routing numbers linked directly to Evelyn’s maiden name and her personal estate manager, Arthur Vance.

""Arthur Vance,"" Rebecca read the name off the screen, her eyes widening. ""He’s the senior managing partner at Vance & Sterling. He’s the one who notarized the fraudulent guardianship petition!""

""He isn't just her estate manager,"" I said, connecting the dots that had lain dormant in my memory for years. ""He’s her lover. He has been since before my father died. Vance handled all of my father’s trust restructuring. He helped Evelyn bleed the estate dry, and now he’s using his legal infrastructure to help her harvest Lucy’s trust fund to save his own firm from bankruptcy.""

Just then, my business partner Marcus called again. I answered and put it on speaker.

""David! Where the hell are you?"" Marcus shouted over the phone, the noise of an anxious boardroom audible in the background. ""The compliance team is losing their minds! We have a paper trail showing four million missing from the Sterling endowment fund!""

""Marcus, listen to me very carefully,"" I said, my voice steady, cutting through his hysteria. ""Do not suspend the accounts. Do not issue a press release. The IP address that uploaded those fraudulent documents originated from Arthur Vance’s private office in downtown Manhattan. I am sending you a verified audit dossier right now, certified by Claire’s forensic team two years ago. Vance is insolvent. He’s using forged transfers to cover his margin calls.""

There was an abrupt silence on the other end of the line. ""David... are you certain about this? Accusing Arthur Vance of federal securities fraud is nuclear.""

""Check your inbox in thirty seconds,"" I told him. ""And Marcus? Have our firm's chief security officer pull the building surveillance records from last night. Look at who used my office keycard after midnight.""
