Chapter 2 - The Whispering Ghost

""She poisoned me,"" I muttered, staring at the dregs of the chamomile tea.

Rebecca immediately pulled a clear plastic evidence bag from her briefcase. Using a pair of stainless steel tweezers, she placed the mug inside and sealed it. ""We take this directly to a private forensic toxicologist. If there are traces of benzodiazepines or z-drugs in this mug, we can attach a criminal complaint to an immediate ex parte order.""

""No police yet,"" I said, catching my breath as an electric spike of adrenaline surged through my veins.

""David, she tried to abduct your child!"" Megan gasped, stepping between us. ""She tried to steal your daughter!""

""And who do you think the local precinct calls first when Evelyn Henderson is accused?"" I countered, my voice hardening. ""My father was a state supreme court justice. Evelyn has lunch with the district attorney every second Tuesday of the month. If I call the local police with a half-drunk cup of tea and a crumpled itinerary, she will claim it was a misunderstanding, that Nassau was a surprise vacation, and that I'm suffering from paranoid grief. She will turn the narrative on me before the ink on the police report dries.""

Rebecca paused, slowly nodding her head in grim concurrence. ""He’s right. Evelyn’s social and legal footprint in this county is vast. If we strike, it must be definitive, absolute, and backed by undeniable federal leverage. Nassau isn’t just a beach resort; it's a financial fortress. Why would she take Lucy there?""

I opened the bottom drawer of my desk, pulling out a backup drive that Claire had given me months before she passed. Claire had been an investigative journalist before she fell ill. When she was diagnosed with terminal cancer, her maternal instincts kicked into overdrive. She hadn't spent her final months quietly resting; she had spent them auditing the family’s entire financial structure to ensure nobody could strip our child of her inheritance.

I plugged the encrypted drive into my laptop. The drive hummed to life, and a folder popped up on the monitor, labeled in Claire’s distinct, clean typography: Contingency - EH.

Megan pressed her hands against her mouth. ""Claire knew?""

""Claire didn't trust my mother from the day we got married,"" I said softly, navigating through the encrypted directories. ""My mother always lived far beyond her means. When my father died five years ago, everyone assumed he left behind a massive estate. But what Claire found out—what she started uncovering right before she got sick—was that my father died almost broke. Evelyn had drained his accounts through bad investments, luxury loans, and shell companies.""

A video file sat inside the folder, dated two weeks before Claire passed. I clicked play.

Claire’s face appeared on screen. She looked frail, her cheeks hollowed by illness, but her hazel eyes burned with the same ferocious intelligence that had captured my heart a decade ago.

""David,"" Claire’s recorded voice whispered through the laptop speakers, quiet and resolute. ""If you are watching this, it means Evelyn has made her move. She thinks I am gone, and she thinks you are vulnerable. Don't look at her as your mother. Look at her as a predator backing into a corner. She owes nearly eight million dollars to private creditors in the Bahamas. She used Lucy’s future trust fund as unauthorized collateral by forging my signature while I was in hospice. If she gets Lucy to Nassau, she can invoke the jurisdiction of an offshore trust protector to liquidate the entire estate. David... protect our baby. Do not let her take Lucy out of the country.""

The video ended, leaving the room in a stunned, suffocating silence.

Outside the window, a black luxury sedan glided silently onto the gravel driveway. The headlights cut through the morning drizzle, extinguishing as the engine hummed to a stop.
