Chapter 4 - The Mask Slips

The sight of the itinerary shattered Evelyn’s aristocratic veneer completely. The warmth drained from her features, replaced by a cold, predatory sneer that Claire had warned me about in that video. She didn't drop her gaze; she didn't apologize or feign ignorance. Instead, her posture straightened, her chin lifting with defiant arrogance.

""You went through my things,"" she hissed, her voice stripping away decades of polite society decorum.

""I found it in Lucy's pajama pocket,"" I replied, my voice shaking with restrained fury. ""My seven-year-old daughter found it because she recognized her own name. She thought Claire’s name was on it. You used a traumatized child as your accomplice to rob her father and drug him in his own bed!""

""Don't you dare raise your voice to me in this house!"" Evelyn snapped, slamming her umbrella against the hardwood floor. ""Everything I have done, I have done to preserve the dignity of the Henderson name! You have spent two years wallowing in grief, paralyzed, allowing Claire’s absurd, middle-class paranoia to dictate our family affairs! Do you have any idea what kind of jeopardy we are in?""

""What jeopardy, Mother? The eight million dollars you borrowed against Lucy’s trust to gamble on failed private equity syndicates in the Caribbean?""

Her face went pale as milk, then flared into a violent shade of crimson. ""Claire was a cancer in this family! She had no right digging into my affairs! That money belongs to the Hendersons! It was generated by your father’s prestige and my social standing! Not some upstart journalist who thought she could dictate terms from her deathbed!""

""That money was Claire’s family inheritance, locked into a trust for Lucy,"" I stepped closer, towering over her. ""You stole her passport. You forged probate petitions. You filed fraudulent medical affidavits claiming I am an addict. Did you really think you could take Lucy out of the country, hand her over to offshore lawyers, and wipe your debts clean?""

""I was going to give her a wonderful life!"" Evelyn shrieked, her voice echoing up the staircase. ""A life without your suffocating, pitiful depression! In Nassau, she would have had tutors, estates, dignity! Here, you are turning her into an anxious, reclusive neurotic just like you! The judge has already signed the preliminary guardianship authorization, David. You are legally unfit!""

The door to the study clicked open. Rebecca Sloan walked out, holding her smartphone, the screen glowing brightly with an active recording indicator.

""Preliminary authorization obtained through perjury and forged physician signatures is a Class C felony, Mrs. Henderson,"" Rebecca declared calmly. ""And under federal statute 18 U.S. Code § 1204, attempting to remove a child from the United States with the intent to obstruct the lawful exercise of parental rights constitutes International Parental Kidnapping.""

Evelyn spun around, her eyes bulging at the sight of the prominent attorney. ""You... you were hiding in the study? You dare ambush me in my son’s home?""

""This isn't an ambush, Evelyn,"" I said, picking up the desk phone from the foyer table. ""This is an eviction. Get out of my house before I have the state troopers escort you off the property in handcuffs.""

Evelyn looked between Rebecca and me. For a moment, I saw genuine panic flicker behind her eyes. But then, a sickening smirk twisted her lips. She reached into her handbag, pulled out a gold cigarette case, and snapped it shut without lighting one.

""You think you're clever, David,"" she whispered with venomous triumph. ""You think you've stopped me with a little piece of paper and your cheap legal games. Check your email. Check your primary corporate server. The board of directors at your investment firm received an anonymous package thirty minutes ago. Embezzlement allegations, fabricated transfer slips, and a complaint detailing your erratic mental state. By noon, you won't have a job, you won't have a security clearance, and your bank accounts will be frozen pending an internal audit. Let’s see how well you protect Lucy when you can't even afford to pay your mortgage.""
