Chapter 7 - The Shadows Strike Back

The kiss was electric, demanding, and full of everything they had both suppressed for weeks behind boardrooms and spreadsheet audits. When Adrian’s arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her flush against his broad chest, Claire felt a sense of belonging and power she had never experienced in her life. For the first time, she wasn't being tolerated; she was being worshiped.
When they finally broke apart, both of them breathing hard, Adrian rested his forehead against hers, a slow, genuine smile spreading across his lips.
""Dinner,"" he whispered softly. ""At my penthouse. No business files. No municipal codes. Just you and me.""
""I’d love that,"" Claire smiled, feeling a weight lift from her chest that had rested there for months.
They took the private executive elevator down to the underground parking garage at eight o'clock. Marcus, Adrian’s trusted head of personal security, was standing beside the armored Mercedes sedan, holding the passenger door open.
""All clear in the bay, Mr. Moretti,"" Marcus reported with a crisp nod. ""The press is still camped outside the main street entrance, but the rear service tunnel is completely deserted.""
""Thank you, Marcus. Let's head to the Upper East Side residence,"" Adrian replied, guiding Claire into the leather interior before sliding in beside her.
The heavy car glided out of the underground complex, navigating the dark, rain-slicked service alleys beneath the financial district. Outside, a late-autumn drizzle was beginning to coat the city streets in a glossy, mirror-like sheen. Claire leaned back against the headrest, her hand resting naturally inside Adrian’s large palm, his thumb drawing slow, soothing circles across her knuckles.
Everything felt peaceful. Finished.
Then, out of nowhere, the world shattered.
A massive, heavy-duty commercial flatbed truck, running completely dark with its headlights switched off, blew through a red light at the intersection of Broome and Hudson.
""Brace!"" Marcus roared from the front seat, slamming on the accelerator in a desperate maneuver to clear the intersection.
The truck slammed into the rear quarter-panel of the Mercedes with the sound of a bomb detonating.
The impact sent the heavy sedan spinning across the wet asphalt. Glass exploded inward in a glittering shower of diamonds. Claire screamed as the violent centrifugal force threw her sideways. Adrian moved with terrifying, instantaneous instinct, throwing his entire body over hers, wrapping his arms around her head and torso, acting as a human shield against the crushing metal and shattering debris.
The car slammed violently into a concrete support pillar beneath the elevated highway, finally coming to a smoking, screeching halt.
Inside the crushed cabin, a cloud of white airbag powder filled the air, smelling of burning rubber and chemical propellant.
Claire coughed, gasping for air. ""Adrian! Adrian!""
Adrian groaned, slowly shifting his weight off her. A dark streak of blood was running down from a deep cut near his hairline, his breathing shallow and strained. ""Claire... are you hurt? Look at me... are you intact?""
""I’m okay! You protected me—you're bleeding!"" Panic seized her throat. She pushed at the crushed door beside her, but the frame was hopelessly buckled.
In the front seat, Marcus was unconscious, slumped over the steering wheel with blood dripping from a broken nose, though his chest still rose and fell with steady breaths.
Outside, the heavy thud of work boots hitting wet pavement echoed through the ruined service alley.
Through the spider-webbed windshield, Claire saw two men dressed in black tactical gear approaching the wreck, their faces concealed behind balaclavas. One of them carried a heavy steel crowbar; the other reached into the pocket of his heavy coat and pulled out a snub-nosed revolver.
""Adrian,"" Claire whispered, her blood running cold as ice. ""They didn't hit us by accident. They're coming to finish it.""
Adrian looked through the cracked glass, his eyes instantly clearing of the shock. Despite the blood dripping down his temple, the ferocious, predatory edge returned to his face with terrifying intensity.
""Harold Cole's cartel partners,"" Adrian muttered, reaching down beneath the reinforced center console and pressing a hidden latch. ""Ryan was just the small fish. His uncle laundered tens of millions for an offshore syndicate that was using our harbor contracts as a cover.""

The panel popped open, revealing a sleek, black semi-automatic pistol.
Adrian chambered a round with a sharp, metallic click. ""Stay down beneath the seat, Claire. Do not move until I tell you.""
