Chapter 2 - The Midnight Offer

The text message glowed like an open wound on the pristine white tablecloth. Claire’s immediate instinct was to turn the phone face down, her heart knocking frantically against her ribs. Years of conditioning under Ryan’s quiet emotional warfare told her to hide, to apologize, to de-escalate before things escalated into screaming matches or icy silences.

Adrian didn’t reach for the device, but his dark eyes tracked her shaking fingers. ""Is that him?""

""He always does this,"" Claire whispered, her voice tightening with humiliating familiar pain. ""Whenever he loses control of a room, he finds a way to make it my fault behind closed doors. In his mind, I provoked him by dancing with someone else.""

""He didn't lose control of the room, Miss Bennett. He lost control of his mask."" Adrian leaned back, his broad shoulders filling the high-backed banquet chair. The easy charm he had displayed moments before on the dance floor had calcified into something ancient and ruthless. ""Block the number. Delete the thread.""

""If I block him, he'll show up at my apartment. He still has a key to the building lobby.""

""Then change the locks tomorrow morning.""

""It's not that simple in the city,"" she said with a dry, humorless laugh. ""Landlords don't move fast, and Ryan knows my schedule down to the minute. I work in municipal planning at the city archive. He knows when I walk to the subway. He knows where I buy coffee.""

Adrian studied her face. For a long, silent moment, the background roar of the wedding reception—clinking silverware, laughter, pop music thumping from the DJ booth—faded into white noise. He seemed to be weighing something heavy in his mind, turning a concept over and over until every angle lined up.

""Frank Romano tells me you run the historical zoning division for the downtown revitalization project,"" Adrian said abruptly.

Claire blinked, thrown by the sudden pivot from stalker ex-boyfriend to corporate urban planning. ""Yes. I’ve been leading that division for two years. How do you know that?""

""I don't invest thirty million dollars into a commercial district without knowing every bureaucrat, engineer, and archivist holding the blueprints,"" he answered cleanly. ""Your reports on structural preservation are brilliant. Thorough. Uncompromising. You rejected two of my firm's variance requests last November because our proposed foundation depths threatened the 19th-century water runoff channels.""

Claire swallowed hard. Her throat felt bone-dry. ""You... you read my zoning denials?""

""I did. My lead architect was furious. He wanted me to bypass you through the mayor's office. I fired him instead and hired someone who knew how to read drainage topography."" A faint smirk touched Adrian's mouth, sharp as a switchblade. ""I don't mind being told no when the person saying it is smarter than the room.""

""I was just doing my job.""

""Precisely. Which brings me to a proposal."" Adrian signaled the waiter, who appeared instantly to clear their untouched dessert plates. ""Ryan Cole is an associate broker in my commercial acquisitions department. He works under a twelve-month performance probation that ends in sixty days. He survives by taking credit for the work of junior analysts and relying on his father's old golf connections.""

Claire felt a cold prickle of anticipation crawl up her spine. ""What are you saying?""

""I am saying that Ryan is disposable. But firing him outright tonight turns him into a martyr. He will sue for wrongful termination, claim personal bias, and spend the next six months harassing you in court depositions and dragging your name through local industry gossip."" Adrian paused, his eyes narrowing into cold slits of obsidian. ""I don't like messy endings. I prefer total, surgical eliminations.""

""Eliminations?"" Claire’s breath hitched. ""You make it sound like you're going to put a hit out on him.""

""Not on his life. On his vanity."" Adrian leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table, closing the distance between them until Claire could catch the faint, masculine scent of cedarwood, aged leather, and expensive tobacco clinging to his lapels. ""Work with me directly. Tomorrow morning, I am announcing an emergency oversight committee for the downtown harbor redevelopment. I need an independent lead consultant with ironclad ethics and an encyclopedic knowledge of municipal property laws.""

""Me?""

""You. The position comes with a private security detail for your apartment, a salary triple your current city stipend, and an office on the top floor of the Moretti Tower."" He held her gaze, refusing to let her look away. ""Right down the hall from Ryan’s division. Every time he walks to the boardroom, he will have to look at the woman he dismissed as worthless sitting at the right hand of the man who signs his paychecks.""

Claire’s head spun. The sheer scale of the retribution was breathtaking, almost terrifying in its ambition. ""And what do you get out of this, Adrian? Men like you don't offer corporate thrones out of the goodness of their hearts.""

""I get an incorruptible director who won't let my contractors cut corners,"" he said evenly. Then his voice dropped a half-octave, intimate and dark. ""And I get to remind a pathetic, posturing boy that when you throw away something rare and magnificent, someone bigger will pick it up and put it on a pedestal where he can never touch it again.""

May you like

Claire felt the blood singing in her veins. For three years she had been made small. Tonight, she chose to take up space.

She reached across the linen tablecloth and extended her hand. ""What time do I start?""
