Chapter 6 - Unraveling the Spite

The click of the handcuffs echoed through the boardroom like the closing of a tomb.

Ryan struggled against the officer’s grip, his face twisted into an ugly, contorted mask of rage and terror. The polished veneer of the country-club golden boy had completely evaporated, leaving behind a snarling, panicked animal.

""You can't do this to me!"" Ryan screamed, his voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria as the officers began marching him toward the double doors. ""My father knows the governor! Moretti, you're a dead man! You hear me? You'll never build another tower in this city! Claire, you bitch! You fat, pathetic loser! Nobody wants you! He's just using you to ruin my family!""

The elevator doors slid shut, cutting off the rest of his obscenities, leaving the sixty-story penthouse boardroom in dead, ringing silence.

The board members sat entirely motionless, terrified to breathe. Adrian turned his back to the door and slowly panned his eyes across the ten senior executives.

""The meeting is adjourned,"" Adrian said in a voice that was terrifyingly even. ""Anyone who leaks a single detail of this incident to the press before our communications team issues the formal press release will find their stock options canceled and their career terminated by noon tomorrow. Get out.""

Within ninety seconds, the boardroom was completely empty, leaving only Adrian and Claire standing beside the massive glass windows overlooking the glittering sprawl of Manhattan.

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Claire felt the adrenaline begin to drain out of her system, replaced by a sudden, bone-deep exhaustion that made her knees tremble. The battle had been won, the danger neutralized, but the psychological toll of watching someone she had spent three years of her life with turn into a literal monster was overwhelming.

She reached out and steadied herself against the back of an empty chair.

In an instant, Adrian was beside her. His strong hands closed around her shoulders, steadying her with gentle, unshakeable warmth. ""Claire. Look at me.""

She looked up into his dark eyes. The ice that usually guarded his features was entirely gone, replaced by raw, unrestrained concern.

""Are you all right?"" he asked softly.

""I will be,"" she whispered, her voice wavering slightly. ""It's just... hearing him say those things. Reminding me of how he saw me. How he always saw me.""

Adrian’s grip tightened slightly, his thumbs tracing the line of her collarbone beneath her silk blouse. ""Listen to me very carefully. That man was a blind, cowardly parasite. He spent three years trying to diminish your light because he knew that if you ever realized your true value, you would leave him in the dust.""

Claire swallowed hard, her heart pounding against her ribs for reasons that had nothing to do with fear. ""Adrian... you brought the police. You dismantled his entire network in less than three hours. How did you know his uncle was involved before I even showed you the audit?""

A faint, almost sheepish smirk crossed Adrian’s lips—the first truly vulnerable expression she had ever seen on the powerful billionaire's face.

""Because the moment you agreed to join this firm, I placed round-the-clock surveillance on every person who posed a potential threat to your safety,"" he admitted quietly. ""I had investigators monitoring Ryan's bank transactions, his phone calls, and his travel records from the second we walked off that dance floor at Frank's wedding.""

Claire’s eyes widened. ""You did all that... for me?""

""I did it because I protect what belongs in my circle,"" Adrian said, his gaze dropping to her lips before returning to her eyes with intense focus. ""And because from the very first second you walked up to me at that bar in that burgundy dress, begging a stranger to save your pride... I knew I was never going to let anyone hurt you again.""

The air between them turned thick, charged with weeks of unspoken desire, mutual respect, and undeniable chemistry. Adrian took a half-step closer, his chest nearly brushing hers. Claire could feel the heat radiating from his body, the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart.

He raised one hand, his fingers gently curving around the nape of her neck, lifting her face toward his.

""Adrian,"" she whispered, her breath hitching.

""Tell me to stop, Claire,"" he murmured against her skin, his voice rough with restraint. ""Tell me to act like your CEO, and I will step back right now.""

Claire didn't step back. Instead, she reached up, her fingers burying themselves in the thick, silver-threaded dark hair at his temples, and pulled him down to her lips.
