Chapter 1 - The Billionaire in the Shadows

Claire Bennett had no idea what Frank Romano’s expression meant, nor did she understand why Ryan Cole looked like he was about to vomit on his rented tuxedo shoes. The entire ballroom seemed suspended inside a frozen bubble of silence.

""Claire,"" Frank repeated, his voice dropping into a register reserved for high-stakes business meetings and funerals. ""Adrian Moretti is the managing director of Moretti Global Enterprises. He owns half the commercial real estate between here and Manhattan. Including the firm Ryan works for.""

Claire blinked. The pieces slammed together with the force of a freight train. She glanced up at the tall man standing beside her. The perfectly tailored Italian wool, the subtle gray threading through his dark hair, the utter lack of panic in his posture—it wasn’t just confidence. It was absolute, unquestioned power.

Ryan took a frantic step backward, his hands shaking so violently that scotch sloshed over the rim of his crystal glass. ""Mr. Moretti... sir... I had no idea you were coming to Michael’s wedding. I swear, what I said earlier, it was completely taken out of context. It was just locker room talk between old college buddies—""

""Locker room talk?"" Adrian’s deep voice sliced cleanly through Ryan’s stuttering. ""You were standing in the middle of a family celebration, speaking into a microphone-adjacent space, humiliating a woman who spent three years building you up while you quietly looked for someone you deemed more aesthetic.""

Adrian didn't raise his voice. He didn't even drop his relaxed posture. Yet every word hit the floor like lead weights.

Vanessa, who had been clinging to Ryan's arm like an accessory twenty minutes earlier, stepped another two feet to the left. ""I told him it was disgusting,"" she muttered, her face flushed crimson. ""I barely know him, honestly. We've been seeing each other for two weeks.""

Ryan spun toward her, betrayed and desperate. ""Vanessa! What are you doing?""

""I’m leaving,"" she snapped, snatching her designer clutch from a cocktail table. ""Don't call me tomorrow. Don't call me ever.""

The click of her heels against the hardwood floor sounded like gunfire in the quiet room.

Claire wanted to sink into the floorboards, but Adrian’s fingers remained lightly hooked beneath her elbow, an anchor keeping her upright. She looked at Ryan. For three years, she had believed this man held her worth in the palm of his hand. She had skipped dinners, hidden her soft curves under bulky sweaters, and endured subtle jabs about her waistline, all because she thought his affection was a prize she had to earn every single day. Seeing him now—sweating, sniveling, abandoned by his trophy date in front of his boss—the spell broke completely.

""Frank,"" Adrian said, turning his back entirely on Ryan as if the younger man had simply ceased to exist in physical space. ""The reception is wonderful. Michael looks happy.""

""He is, Adrian. Truly,"" Frank said quickly, exhaling a breath he seemed to have been holding for five minutes. ""Can I get you a fresh drink? The private reserve in the back?""

""No, thank you. Miss Bennett and I were just about to sit down."" Adrian looked down at Claire, his obsidian eyes dark with an amused, unreadable intensity. ""Unless you prefer to escape the spotlight now?""

""Sit down sounds wonderful,"" Claire murmured, her voice steadier than she felt.

Adrian led her toward the VIP table near the dais—a table that had sat empty all night, waiting for a guest of honor no one actually expected to show up. As they walked, Claire could feel the gaze of two hundred guests burning into her back. Natalie, still standing on the dance floor in her white lace gown, caught Claire’s eye and gave her a wide, jaw-dropped thumbs-up behind her bouquet.

When they reached the table, Adrian pulled out her chair with effortless grace. Claire sat, smoothing down the deep burgundy fabric of her bridesmaid dress.

""Mr. Moretti,"" she began, leaning forward as he took the seat opposite her.

""Adrian,"" he corrected smoothly, signaling a passing waiter for two sparkling waters with lemon. ""You pulled me onto the dance floor without asking for my resume. Calling me by my last name now feels like a demotion.""

""Adrian,"" she repeated, tasting the syllables. ""Why did you do that? You don't know me. You could have walked away when I grabbed your hand. Instead, you just effectively ruined Ryan's career in front of everyone he knows.""

Adrian rested his forearms on the white linen tablecloth. His hands were large, his knuckles strong, his silver watch gleaming beneath the chandelier. ""I despise bullies,"" he said simply. ""Particularly cowards who hide behind self-deprecating grins and attack the people who love them. But more importantly, Miss Bennett...""

He leaned in slightly, his gaze locking onto hers with terrifying precision. ""...I don't dance with people out of charity. You looked like a woman who was ready to burn the room down rather than cry. I respect that.""

Claire felt a hot pulse rush beneath her collarbones. ""I was terrified.""

""Courage isn't the absence of fear,"" Adrian murmured. ""It's walking straight into the fire anyway. And by the way—you look spectacular in burgundy.""

Before Claire could answer, her phone buzzed violently against the table. She flipped it over.

May you like

It was a text from an unknown number, but the venom was instantly recognizable: You think you’re smart playing games with Moretti? You have no idea what you just started, Claire. You’re going to pay for this.

She stared at the glowing screen. Adrian’s gaze dropped to the glass surface, taking in the words in a fraction of a second. The warmth vanished from his features, replaced by the glacial stillness of a predator that had just picked up a scent.
