Chapter 9 - The Final Rejection

I didn't answer Rachel's text immediately. I stood up, walked into the kitchen, poured myself a fresh glass of iced tea, and walked back out onto the deck. Sarah watched me with quiet intuition, noticing the shift in my posture.
""Something wrong?"" she asked gently.
""No,"" I answered, handing her the phone. ""Just an echo from a ghost.""
Sarah read the text message slowly. She didn't react with jealousy or insecurity; she was far too secure in herself and in what we were building to be threatened by a desperate plea from a shattered past. She handed the phone back to me. ""What are you going to do?""
""What I should have done five years ago,"" I said. ""Put an absolute end to the story.""
I sat down, unlocked the screen, and tapped out a response. I didn't write an essay. I didn't remind her of the pain she had inflicted, the money she had stolen, or the public humiliation she had orchestrated at Murphy’s Bar. Narcissists feed on emotional reactions, whether positive or negative. The only antidote to their poison is total, absolute irrelevance.
Rachel, I typed. Your financial and housing difficulties are entirely the result of your own choices. We share no history that requires revisiting. Lucas is thriving, happy, and healthy. If you have legitimate communications regarding court-ordered visitation schedules, please direct them to Arthur Vance’s office. Do not contact this number again. I wish you well.
I hit send, then immediately selected the number, tapped Block this Contact, and deleted the thread permanently from the device.
Five minutes later, Arthur Vance called my personal line.
""Ethan,"" Arthur's voice came through the speaker, crisp and amused. ""Did you just receive a message from your ex-wife?""
""I did,"" I replied. ""And I directed her straight to you before blocking her.""
Arthur chuckled. ""She called my office switchboard in hysterics three minutes ago, claiming she was going to petition the court for emergency spousal support modifications due to severe economic hardship.""
""Does she have a leg to stand on?""
""Not even a toe,"" Arthur said firmly. ""The marital settlement agreement she signed was comprehensive and non-modifiable regarding spousal maintenance. She waived all future claims in exchange for avoiding criminal grand larceny charges. I informed her legal aid attorney that if she files a single frivolous motion, we will immediately initiate criminal proceedings for the unrecovered portions of the bank fraud. The attorney apologized and withdrew the inquiry on the spot. You are entirely in the clear.""
""Thank you, Arthur. For everything.""
""Enjoy your evening, Ethan. You've earned it.""
I hung up the phone and slipped it into my pocket, turning back to Sarah. The sun had completely dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in deep shades of violet and indigo. The cool evening air smelled of pine and damp earth.
From the upstairs window, Lucas’s voice drifted down, laughing loudly at something Toby had said. A pure, unburdened sound of a boy who felt safe in his own home.

Sarah smiled, leaning her head against my chest, her warmth chasing away the night chill. ""It's completely over, isn't it?""
""It's been over for a long time,"" I whispered into her hair. ""We’re just living the good part now.""
