Chapter 5 - The Midnight Standoff

The driver's door of the Mustang flew open, slamming against the curb with a sickening crunch of fiberglass. Rachel stumbled out into the darkness, her hair wild and disheveled from the wind, her coat dragging on the pavement. Tyler emerged from the other side, his broad chest heaving, his fists clenched tight at his sides.

""Ethan!"" Rachel shrieked, running toward the porch steps like a woman possessed. ""You open this door right now! This is my house! My name is on the deed!""

Arthur Vance stepped calmly out from the shadow of the porch pillar, holding a thick manila folder under his arm. ""Mrs. Voss, step back from the property line immediately.""

Rachel stopped dead in her tracks, startled by the presence of a strange, sharply dressed man standing beside her husband in the dark. ""Who the hell are you?""

""My name is Arthur Vance. I represent your husband in the matter of Voss v. Voss, filed this afternoon in the third district family court,"" Arthur said, his voice ringing with absolute, practiced authority. ""You were legally served at Murphy's Bar approximately forty minutes ago. Under Section 4B of the emergency protective order issued by Judge Holloway, you are barred from entering this premises without a court-appointed escort.""

Tyler stormed up the driveway, pointing a thick, trembling finger in Arthur's face. ""Get out of our way, old man! She lives here! You can’t throw a woman out on the street in the middle of the night!""

""Mr. Brandt,"" Arthur said without blinking, not even bothering to take a step back. ""If you take one more step onto this property, you will be in direct violation of state trespassing laws, and I will instruct Mr. Voss to contact dispatch immediately. Furthermore, Deputy Miller is currently parked at the gas station three hundred yards down the road, waiting for my signal. Would you like to spend the night in holding alongside your business partner?""

Tyler froze. The sheer legal certainty in Arthur’s voice was like ice water thrown across an open flame. Tyler looked at the porch, then at the Ring camera blinking red above the front door, and finally at me.

""You're a coward, Voss,"" Tyler spat, trying to save face. ""Hiding behind lawyers and paperwork like a little bitch.""

""I’m a man protecting my child and my assets from two common thieves,"" I replied evenly from the porch steps. ""Your bags are on the sidewalk, Rachel. Take them and leave.""

Rachel looked at the two large designer suitcases resting near the mailbox. The sight seemed to break whatever remained of her fragile, manic composure. She dropped to her knees right there on the asphalt of the driveway, bursting into wild, jagged sobs.

""Ethan, please!"" she begged, tears washing away the last remnants of her arrogance. ""We can fix this! We can go to counseling! I was unhappy, I made a mistake, but we have sixteen years together! You can't just throw me away like garbage!""

""You didn't make a mistake, Rachel,"" I said, looking down at her without a trace of anger. ""A mistake is forgetting to buy milk. A mistake is leaving the garage door open. Cheating on your husband for eight months, stealing twenty-four thousand dollars to fund your boyfriend's vanity project, and systematically humiliating the father of your child in front of your friends? That wasn't a mistake. That was an execution. You just didn't realize you were the one holding the noose.""

""Come on, Rachel,"" Tyler grumbled, looking around nervously as a neighbor’s porch light flicked on across the street. ""Get up. Don't beg this nerd. Let's go.""

""Shut up, Tyler!"" she screamed at him, turning like a cornered animal. ""This is your fault! You told me he was too stupid to figure it out! You told me we’d take the house and get the gym refinanced!""

""Oh, did he?"" I chuckled softly. ""Well, it turns out the nerd can read a bank statement. Get off my property before I have Arthur call the deputy.""

May you like

Tyler grabbed Rachel roughly by the arm, hauling her to her feet. She sobbed uncontrollably, her designer shoes dragging along the gravel as he shoved her into the passenger seat of the Mustang. He threw her bags into the backseat, slammed the trunk, and peeled out of the neighborhood, leaving black skid marks across the pavement.

Arthur let out a soft sigh, turning to me with a wry smile. ""Well, that went about as well as could be expected. Get some sleep, Ethan. The real work starts tomorrow morning at nine.""
