Chapter 2 - The Envelope Drops

The thud of the envelope settled heavily over the table, vibrating the glasses of cheap chardonnay and draft beer. For five full seconds, nobody breathed. The glossy, yellow-brown paper sat directly beneath the dim amber light of the low-hanging pendant lamp, bearing a single word written across the center in black marker: EVIDENCE.

""What the hell is this, Ethan?"" Rachel demanded, though the confident bark in her voice had thinned into something sharp and brittle. She stared at the packet, refusing to touch it, as if making physical contact might trigger a trap.

""That,"" I said calmly, leaning forward and resting my forearms on the edge of the table, ""is your ticket to freedom. You just spent twenty minutes explaining to your dearest friends how much of an anchor I am. How I’m suffocating your potential. Well, I’m an IT project manager, Rachel. When a system is defective beyond repair, I don't argue with it. I decommission it.""

Tyler let out a forced, scoffing chuckle that sounded hollow even to his own ears. ""Look at the tough guy. Bringing homework to the bar. What is that, bank statements showing how cheap you are?""

""Open it, Tyler,"" I said, looking him dead in the eye. ""Go ahead. You've never been shy about taking things that belong to me. Why start showing restraint now?""

Tyler’s face flushed a deep, blotchy crimson. He glanced at Rachel, whose skin had drained of its golden, salon-tanned warmth, leaving her looking gray and strangely haggard under the harsh tavern lighting. When neither of them moved, Bri’s curiosity finally overpowered her loyalty. She reached across the condiments, hooked two manicured fingers around the clasp, and pulled the envelope toward herself.

""Bri, don't,"" Rachel whispered, but it was far too late.

Bri slid out the thick stack of high-resolution glossy photographs and stapled documents. The top photograph slipped onto the scarred wood. It was an unmistakable, crystal-clear 4K shot taken through the tinted rear window of Tyler's red Mustang in the parking lot behind the Riverfront Marina. Rachel’s face was turned toward the lens, her lips pressed hard against Tyler's neck, his hand buried deep in her styled hair.

Sienna leaned over Bri's shoulder and let out a strangled gasp, clamping her hand over her mouth. Greg stared at the photo, then looked up at Tyler with genuine disgust clouding his brow. ""Dude... seriously? In the marina lot? You told me you were checking on suppliers.""

""Shut up, Greg!"" Tyler barked, his voice cracking as he lunged forward to swipe the papers, but Bri had already fanned out the rest of the pile across the table like a blackjack dealer showing a royal flush.

There were hotel receipts from the downtown Hilton, complete with time stamps showing keycard access matching Rachel’s 'business conference' dates. There were screenshots of encrypted WhatsApp chats, meticulously recovered and verified by a digital forensics firm I’d hired two months prior, detailing explicit plans, crude jokes about my work schedule, and discussions about how much alimony Rachel planned to extract once Lucas turned fifteen.

""This is illegal,"" Rachel hissed, her voice trembling with a mixture of terror and mounting fury. She lunged forward, grabbing a handful of photos and clutching them to her chest as if she could hide the truth by destroying the paper. ""You tapped my phone! You hired someone to stalk me! This is an invasion of privacy, you sick freak!""

""Actually, it’s completely legal,"" I replied smoothly, pulling a neatly folded sheet of legal paper from my inner pocket. ""Every photo was taken in public spaces by a licensed private investigator. And those WhatsApp logs? You left your secondary iPad backed up to the family iCloud account that I administer and pay for. You always said I was useless with technology unless something needed rebooting. You really should have listened to your own critiques.""

Bri was scrolling through the printed financial ledgers with wide, ravenous eyes. ""Wait... Rachel, is this your agency account? What is this six-thousand-dollar transfer to 'Peak Performance LLC'?""

""Tyler’s gym,"" I supplied pleasantly. ""Tyler wasn't just taking my wife, Bri. He was taking my money. Rachel has been using our joint savings equity line to float his failing boutique fitness studio for the past six months. Twenty-four thousand dollars in total, disguised as 'consulting fees' paid to an LLC registered under Tyler's mother's maiden name.""

The table descended into total pandemonium.
