Chapter 7 - The True Worth

Mark’s hands fell limply to his sides as he stared at the cashier's check resting on top of his plastic storage bin. Four thousand two hundred dollars.
That was the sum total of his legacy in the home he had claimed to own.
"Claire, please," Mark whispered, stepping closer, his voice cracking with desperate, sudden pleading. "Can we just talk inside? Just five minutes. Without the lawyers."
"We talked yesterday, Mark," I replied, looking at him with complete emotional detachment. "You stood in my foyer with your mistress, smirked at my face, and told me not to embarrass myself."
Vanessa stepped up beside him, her initial arrogance having completely transformed into bitter resentment. She looked at Mark’s wrinkled suit, his six plastic bins sitting on the damp grass, and the rental van idling at the curb.
"Mark," Vanessa said, her voice sharp as glass. "You told me you owned this property outright. You told me you had half a million dollars in liquid equity."
Mark spun on her, his face contorting in panic. "I do! In our investment portfolios! In our joint accounts!"
"Those accounts were frozen by court order at nine o'clock this morning, Mr. Holloway," Arthur interjected smoothly. "And our forensic audit reveals that you have accumulated eighty-six thousand dollars in private credit card debt over the last nine months—debt incurred at five-star resorts in South Beach, luxury jewelry boutiques, and French restaurants."
Arthur turned to Vanessa with a polite nod. "I believe you were the beneficiary of those romantic excursions, Miss Sterling. Under the dissipated assets doctrine, we are petitioning the court to hold both of you jointly liable for the stolen marital funds."
Vanessa’s jaw dropped. She looked at Mark as if he were a poisonous insect that had crawled onto her designer shoes.
"You lied to me," Vanessa spat, taking three rapid steps backward toward the street. "You told me your wife was a penniless dependent! You told me you were funding everything!"
"Vanessa, wait!" Mark cried, reaching out for her hand. "It's just a temporary legal freeze! My commission check clears next Friday!"
"Your commission check?" Vanessa let out a shrill, mocking laugh. "Your firm put you on administrative leave thirty minutes ago after the deputies served you in the lobby! The managing partner called me while we were driving over here!"

She didn't wait for his answer. She hailed a passing rideshare on the avenue, threw her overnight bag into the backseat, and slammed the door, leaving Mark standing completely alone on the asphalt.
He had betrayed six years of marriage for a woman who abandoned him the second the illusion of wealth dissolved.
