Chapter 5 - The Humiliation at the Office

At ten-thirty that morning, Mark was lounging in the open-concept lounge of Vantage Marketing Group, holding court around the espresso bar with two junior account executives.

He had spent the morning boasting about his upcoming trip to Cabo with Vanessa, dropping hints that he was finalizing a major real estate upgrade.

"Sometimes you just outgrow a person, you know?" Mark said, leaning against the counter with his hands in his pockets. "A man needs an ambitious partner who matches his vision, not a quiet homebody who drags her feet every time you want to take an investment risk."

Vanessa was sitting nearby at a glass conference table, typing on her phone, looking every bit the proud conqueror who had secured a wealthy corporate director.

The heavy glass doors of the executive suite swung open. Two uniformed Cook County sheriff's deputies walked through the lobby, their heavy leather utility belts creaking in the sudden silence of the office.

The receptionist stood up abruptly, her face pale. "Can I help you, officers?"

"We're looking for Mark Holloway," the senior deputy stated loudly, his voice echoing across the thirty workstations.

Every head in the room turned. Mark froze mid-laugh, the espresso cup pausing an inch from his lips as the color began draining from his cheeks.

"I'm... I'm Mark Holloway," he stammered, stepping forward with a nervous, defensive smile. "Is there an issue with my vehicle in the garage?"

The deputy didn't smile. He pulled a thick manila envelope from his tactical folder and slapped it directly against Mark's chest.

"Mark Holloway, you have been formally served with a petition for dissolution of marriage and an emergency domestic exclusion order issued by the Chancery Division," the deputy announced clearly.

Murmurs erupted across the open floor. Vanessa jumped up from her chair, her eyes wide with shock and horror as coworkers stared at them.

"What is this?!" Mark hissed, his hands shaking as he broke the seal on the envelope. "This is ridiculous! My wife is having an emotional breakdown!"

"You have also been served with an immediate trespassing injunction for the residential property located at 414 Oak Ridge Lane," the deputy continued, checking his clipboard without missing a beat. "You have until twelve o'clock sharp to collect your personal clothing under police escort, or your belongings will be transferred to a municipal storage facility."

Mark’s jaw dropped in absolute disbelief. "Twelve o'clock today?! She told me she was packing! She told me she was leaving by Sunday!"

"The order is active, sir," the deputy replied with arctic authority. "If you set foot on that property after twelve o'clock without our presence, you will be arrested on sight for criminal trespass."
