Chapter 6 - The Scramble on the Lawn

By eleven-fifteen that morning, Mark and Vanessa pulled up to Oak Ridge Lane in a yellow moving van they had frantically rented from a nearby depot.

Mark leaped out of the cab, his tie flying over his shoulder, his face mottled red with fury.

Standing on my front lawn, looking elegant and entirely at peace, was me. Beside me stood Arthur Vance and a professional locksmith who was currently finishing the installation of high-security digital deadbolts on the heavy front door.

Two private security officers in navy blazers stood calmly near the driveway, their arms crossed.

"Claire!" Mark bellowed, charging up the stone walkway with his fists clenched. "What the hell do you think you're doing?! You had the sheriff come to my workplace?!"

Before he could reach the porch steps, the two security guards stepped smoothly into his path, blocking him with the unyielding mass of two brick walls.

"Back up, Mr. Holloway," the lead guard instructed quietly. "You are violating the perimeter."

"Get your hands off me!" Mark screamed, turning toward me with venomous eyes. "Claire, call off these thugs! You can't lock me out of my own home! Vanessa and I have reservations for our furniture delivery tomorrow!"

"There will be no furniture deliveries, Mark," I said, my voice carrying cleanly over the neighborhood breeze. "Your personal effects have already been packed into these six plastic containers on the driveway."

Vanessa stepped out of the rental van, looking utterly mortified as two of our neighbors—women I had shared book club meetings with for five years—stood across the street watching the spectacle with arms crossed.

"Mark," Vanessa hissed, pulling at his sleeve. "Look at the containers! Your suits are in the driveway! We need to leave before someone takes a video!"

"I'm not leaving!" Mark roared, his composure completely disintegrating into hysterical panic. "This house is worth eight hundred thousand dollars! I paid the mortgage! I am entitled to half of this asset!"

Arthur Vance stepped forward, holding a manila folder filled with certified bank disclosures.

"Mr. Holloway," Arthur spoke up, his deep voice cutting through Mark's tantrum like a surgeon's scalpel. "The down payment of two hundred and eighty thousand dollars was funded via a direct transfer from the Eleanor Vance Trust. Under state statute 750 ILCS 5/503, non-marital property remains the sole estate of the original beneficiary."

"I paid the monthly notes!" Mark fired back.

"Using deposits transferred from Claire’s private design consultancy account forty-eight hours before every billing cycle," Arthur countered with a thin, mocking smile. "Your total documented contribution to this asset over six years amounts to precisely four thousand two hundred dollars. We have enclosed a certified cashier's check for that exact amount in container number one."

Mark stared at the folder, the final pillar of his arrogant delusion crumbling to dust beneath his feet.
