Chapter 2 - The Midnight Fortress

Arthur remained completely silent on the line for five full seconds, absorbing the revelation. When he finally spoke, his voice was measured, sharp, and entirely focused on legal warfare.

"Do not sign a single paper Mark puts in front of you," Arthur commanded. "Do not move out of that house tonight, do not scream at the mistress, and under no circumstances do you mention that ticket to a living soul."

"He told me I have until Sunday," I murmured, watching shadows move beneath the crack of the bedroom door.

"Sunday is plenty of time to build an ironclad perimeter," Arthur said. "First thing tomorrow morning, we establish a blind revocable trust in Delaware to claim the prize anonymously. If you claim it under your personal name while still legally married, Mark’s attorneys could file an emergency petition claiming marital property rights."

"Can he take half?" A knot of cold dread tightened in my stomach.

"Not if we move fast," Arthur replied. "In our state, the date of legal separation determines the marital estate boundary. Did Mark explicitly state in front of that woman that your marriage was over and that he wanted a divorce?"

"Yes," I answered. "He introduced her as his partner and demanded a divorce in front of our hallway mirror."

"Then tomorrow morning at eight-thirty, I am filing an expedited petition for marital dissolution citing irreconcilable differences and adultery, establishing today’s date as the permanent cut-off line," Arthur said with razor-like precision. "And by noon, we're serving him with an eviction injunction for the house."

I closed my eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. "Arthur, the down payment for this house came from my grandmother’s trust, but Mark paid the monthly mortgage installments from our joint account for four years."

"He paid mortgage payments from an account funded eighty percent by your design consulting retainers," Arthur countered with a grim chuckle. "I have your tax returns, Claire. Mark spent six years claiming he carried the household, but the banking manifests show he barely covered his own car lease."

A sharp knock rattled the bedroom door, making me jump.

"Claire!" Mark’s irritated voice boomed through the wood. "Unlock the door. Vanessa needs the master bathroom to freshen up. You can sleep in the guest room tonight."

May you like

I looked at the phone in my hand. Arthur had heard every word.

"Do not unlock it, Claire," Arthur whispered into my ear. "Tell him through the wood that he can take his guest to a hotel, or you will dial emergency dispatch for domestic harassment. Let him dig his own grave on record."
