Chapter 9 - Stripped of Everything

Six weeks later, the Fairfield County courthouse held the final hearing for the dissolution of the marriage between Everett Hale and Emily Sterling.
Everett was brought into the courtroom in prison chains, his hands shackled to his waist, wearing an ill-fitting navy prison uniform. His once-immaculate posture was completely gone, his shoulders rounded, his eyes sunken and dull.
Across the courtroom, Emily sat at the plaintiff's table. She wore a sharp, bespoke white power suit, her demeanor radiating calm, absolute command. She looked like an empress reviewing the final paperwork of an insignificant administrative chore.
Behind her sat Evelyn and Claire Hale, squeezed into the gallery benches. Evelyn was dressed in cheap, off-the-rack clothing, her face gaunt and haggard without her expensive salon treatments and botox. Claire sat with her head down, desperately clutching a worn canvas purse, unable to meet the eyes of the court reporters scribbling in the front row.
Judge Harrison adjusted his reading glasses, reviewing the final settlement agreement before him.
"Mr. Hale," the judge said, his voice echoing in the wood-paneled room. "In light of the grand jury indictments and the undisputed findings of the corporate receiver, you have agreed to waive all claims to the marital estate, all claims to spousal maintenance, and all legal rights to the properties registered under the Sterling Global Syndicate."
"Yes, Your Honor," Everett whispered, barely loud enough for the microphone to pick up his surrender.
"You have also agreed to execute full restitution orders in the amount of fourteen million dollars, to be paid from any future earnings, book rights, or commercial assets you may ever acquire," the judge continued.
"Yes, Your Honor."
"Mrs. Sterling," Judge Harrison turned his gaze toward Emily, his tone shifting into one of profound professional respect. "The court notes that you have declined to pursue civil damages against the defendant's immediate family, provided they vacate all properties and adhere strictly to the permanent restraining orders filed by your legal team."
Emily rose gracefully, leaning forward toward her microphone. "That is correct, Your Honor. I have no interest in punishing those who have already destroyed themselves. The Hale family wanted to live in a fantasy world. I am content to leave them with the reality they earned."
The judge brought his gavel down with a resounding, final crack. "The marriage between Everett Hale and Emily Sterling is hereby dissolved. Court is adjourned."
As the bailiffs stepped forward to escort Everett back toward the holding cells, he stopped. He looked across the mahogany railing at Emily, his voice cracking with a desperate, pathetic longing.
"Emily..." he choked out. "Just tell me one thing. Did you ever love me? Even for a day?"
Emily paused, turning her cool, beautiful eyes toward him. Her gaze was not filled with hatred, nor was it filled with vengeance. It was filled with complete, terrifying indifference—the true opposite of love.

"I loved the man I thought you were, Everett," she answered softly. "Too bad he never existed."
With that, she turned her back on him, walking down the center aisle of the courtroom with her head held high, surrounded by her security detail, leaving him to the darkness of his prison cell.
