Chapter 2 - The Red Carpet Mirage

The Grand Ballroom of the iconic Plaza Hotel gleamed in gold leaf, crystal chandeliers, and the perfumed arrogance of Manhattan’s elite. Flashbulbs erupted along the red carpet as high-profile CEOs, tech moguls, and venture capitalists stepped into the grand foyer. Everett Hale stood near the center ice sculpture, holding a fluted glass of vintage Dom Pérignon, soaking in the attention like a starved predator.
Beside him, Sabrina Cole looked radiant in a backless emerald silk gown, leaning possessively against his shoulder. Her neck glittered with a five-carat diamond necklace—an expense Everett had disguised on Hale Enterprises’ balance sheet as a "corporate media retainer." Behind them stood Evelyn and Claire Hale, draped in furs and designer satin, greeting socialites with condescending smiles, reveling in the illusion of their invincible prestige.
"Darling, you were brilliant with the Wall Street Journal reporter," Sabrina purred into Everett’s ear, gently brushing a speck of lint from his lapel. "Everyone is talking about how Hale Enterprises is the chosen recipient of the Sterling capital injection. You've convinced the entire room that you already have the syndicate in your pocket."
Everett smirked, adjusting his cufflinks with practiced vanity. "Perception is reality in this town, Sabrina. The moment this room believes the Sterling family is backing us, our credit rating triples overnight. The banks won't dare call in our debt. And once that fifty million clears into our primary account, we can quietly clean up the vendor liabilities and finalize Emily’s paperwork."
Evelyn drifted closer, a glass of champagne in hand, her face stretched taut with pride and expensive cosmetic procedures. "Leaving that drab little mouse at home was the best decision you ever made, son. Imagine if you had brought Emily here tonight. Her dreadful lack of poise, that dreadful nervous habit of looking down... people would think we were running a charity. She’s completely unsuited for high society."
"She’s probably crying into a sink full of dirty pots right now," Claire chimed in with a spiteful giggle. "I deliberately left the burnt paella pan in the sink just to give her something to scrub until midnight. She belongs in the scullery, not around real wealth."
Everett laughed along with them, feeling entirely invincible. He checked his Patek Philippe watch, his eyes darting toward the elevated VIP dais where a private table remained conspicuously empty, surrounded by private security guards in charcoal suits with discreet earpieces.
"Have you seen him yet?" Everett whispered, glancing around the room. "The broker said the executive trustee of Sterling Investment Group would be arriving before nine o'clock. If I can secure a ten-minute private conversation before the keynote address, the term sheet will be signed before midnight."
"Don't worry, Everett," Sabrina whispered, smoothing his lapel again. "You're the most charismatic executive in this room. No investor in their right mind could possibly turn down a visionary like you."
Suddenly, the ambient chatter of the grand ballroom dipped noticeably. The double oak doors at the primary entrance swung open, flanked by four towering private security officers wearing the distinctive silver-and-black insignias of the Sterling Private Security detail.

The master of ceremonies stepped up to the central podium, tapping the microphone to cut through the muted murmurs of the room. The sudden silence was palpable, heavy with anticipation.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the announcer proclaimed, his voice carrying clearly across the cathedral ceilings, "please welcome the majority shareholder, Chief Executive Officer, and Global Chair of the Sterling Investment Group... Madame Emily Sterling."
