Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Hale Dynasty

By six o’clock the following morning, the sun rose over a Manhattan financial district that was tearing Hale Enterprises to shreds.

Trading on the New York Stock Exchange opened with an unprecedented halt on Hale Enterprises stock after the shares plummeted eighty-eight percent in pre-market trading. Wall Street analysts appeared on CNBC and Bloomberg television, dissecting the spectacular collapse of the company. On-screen graphics displayed flashing red numbers alongside candid photographs of Everett Hale being led away in handcuffs outside the Greenwich gates.

In a dingy holding cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, Everett sat on a cold steel bench, wearing an orange jumpsuit that felt like sandpaper against his skin. His hair was disheveled, his eyes bloodshot, and his hands shook relentlessly.

Across the plexiglass partition in the visitors' room sat his defense attorney, Arthur Vance—a lawyer assigned by the court after every high-end private firm in Manhattan refused to take his case without a multi-million-dollar cash retainer that Everett could no longer provide.

"Can I get bail, Arthur?" Everett asked desperately, his voice raw from crying. "Can’t we post the brownstone or the family jewelry?"

Arthur Vance sighed heavily, looking over the legal brief with utter despair. "Everett, you don't own the brownstone. The title was under Hale Holdings, which has been seized by the court-appointed bankruptcy receiver. Your mother’s jewelry was purchased with corporate funds earmarked for supplier escrows—it’s been confiscated as evidence of grand larceny."

"What about my mother? Where is she?"

"Your mother and sister were evicted from their apartments this morning," the attorney replied bluntly. "Your mother is currently staying at an extended-stay motel near Queens, paid for by your sister’s remaining personal savings. But those savings will be depleted within a month. Claire has been terminated from her public relations firm due to the public scandal."

Everett buried his face in his hands, letting out a guttural sob. "And Emily? Has she said anything? Has she offered a settlement?"

Arthur looked at him with an expression that bordered on disgust. "Ms. Sterling doesn't need to settle. Her forensic auditors have handed the Department of Justice a five-hundred-page binders worth of flawless evidence. Sabrina Cole has already signed a plea deal. She’s testifying against you on Tuesday in exchange for a reduced sentence. You are facing twenty-five years in federal prison, Everett. The only thing you can decide now is whether you plead guilty or spend the rest of your youth sitting through a trial that will air every miserable detail of your life on international television."

Everett slumped back against the concrete wall, staring blankly at the ceiling. In less than twenty-four hours, his entire existence had evaporated. The luxury cars, the private clubs, the bespoke suits, the adoring mistress, the arrogant dominance he had wielded over his quiet wife—all of it had been an illusion, a house of cards built on borrowed sand, blown away by a single breath from the woman he had treated like a servant.
