Chapter 5 - Whispers In The Penthouse

By sunrise, Chicago was enveloped in an early winter fog that rolled off Lake Michigan, swallowing the towering skyscrapers in an ethereal white veil. Gabriel insisted on moving Rebecca out of the estate before the media caught wind of the unfolding corporate drama. A heavily armored convoy carried them through the deserted city streets to the private residence level of the Moretti Tower—a seventy-story glass monolith overlooking the dark waters of the lake.
The penthouse was a breathtaking expanse of minimalist luxury: floor-to-ceiling glass, Italian marble, warm hardwood accents, and private terraces that seemed suspended among the clouds. Aunt Margaret was already there, wrapped in a plush cashmere throw, sitting in the sunlit breakfast nook with a fresh cup of coffee.
""Becca! Oh, my sweet girl!"" Margaret cried, bursting into tears the moment Rebecca walked through the double doors. The elderly woman threw her arms around Rebecca, weeping as she took in the bruises on her niece’s face. ""The guards told me what that bastard did to you! Seven years we let that snake sit at our Sunday dinner table!""
""I'm alright, Aunt Margaret. I'm safe,"" Rebecca choked out, burying her face into her aunt's shoulder, finally allowing the full weight of the trauma to release.
Gabriel stood quietly near the threshold, giving the two women their sacred moment of reunion. He was speaking on a secure satellite phone, his voice clipped and decisive: ""Freeze the offshore accounts in Cyprus. Issue the subpoenas for Mercer’s personal attorney. And tell our media liaisons that if a single tabloid prints Rebecca Foster’s name in connection with the embezzlement, I will buy their publishing house and fire every editor before lunch.""
He ended the call, slipping the phone into his pocket as he approached the dining area.
""Mrs. Vance,"" Gabriel said politely, dipping his head with old-world courtesy. ""My staff has prepared two master guest suites for you and Rebecca on this floor. You will have a private chef, round-the-clock medical staff, and complete security. No one enters this building without my direct biometric authorization.""
""Mr. Moretti,"" Margaret said, her voice trembling as she looked at the towering billionaire. ""We are simple people. We cannot possibly repay you for this kind of protection.""
""You owe me nothing, Mrs. Vance,"" Gabriel replied smoothly. ""In fact, it is my organization that owes your niece an unpayable debt. Daniel Mercer used Moretti resources to terrorize her under our banner. That is an insult to my family’s honor that I intend to rectify personally.""
Later that afternoon, after Margaret had fallen asleep in the warmth of the guest suite, Rebecca found herself wandering into the massive private library at the end of the corridor. The walls were lined with thousands of rare first editions and leather-bound historical volumes.
Gabriel was sitting at a massive mahogany desk, his jacket discarded, his shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing powerful, corded muscles and a delicate black tattoo of a soaring falcon encircling his right wrist. He was reviewing legal documents, but the moment Rebecca entered, he set his gold fountain pen down and gave her his undivided attention.
""You should be resting, Rebecca,"" he said, his gaze lingering on the swelling around her cheek, which had begun to subside under the doctor's specialized care.
""I can't sleep,"" she admitted, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling glass wall that looked out over the foggy Chicago skyline. ""Every time I close my eyes, I hear the click of that cellar bolt. I hear Daniel telling me I didn't know my place.""
Gabriel rose from his chair and walked across the room, stopping just beside her, his towering frame providing a solid, comforting barrier against the vast void outside.
""Daniel was a coward who preyed on your gentle nature because he knew your spirit was ten times stronger than his,"" Gabriel said, his voice deep and steady. ""A man who uses his fists to silence a woman is already defeated. He is nothing now, Rebecca. A ghost waiting for a prison sentence.""
Rebecca looked up at him, studying the harsh, handsome contours of his profile. ""And what are you, Gabriel? The city papers call you a ruthless shadow. They say the Moretti family leaves no survivors when their empire is challenged.""
May you like
Gabriel turned to face her, his stormy gray eyes searching hers with breathtaking vulnerability. ""I am ruthless to those who threaten what I protect,"" he conceded softly. ""To the corrupt, I am their worst nightmare. But to those who dwell under my protection... I am their shield. If you will allow me, Rebecca, I would like to be yours.""
A strange, electric warmth fluttered in Rebecca’s chest, completely bypassing her lingering fear. For the first time in seven years, she didn't feel like a servant walking on eggshells. She felt seen.
