Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

Thirty minutes later, the chaotic hum of the estate had faded into an eerie, clinical quiet. A private medical team arrived via the rear courtyard, carrying specialized trauma kits and ice packs. A female physician with an authoritative demeanor cleaned the laceration on Rebecca’s lip, applied soothing antiseptic salve to her bruised wrist, and confirmed that while her cheekbone was severely contused, there were no structural fractures.
Throughout the entire examination, Gabriel Moretti remained in the corner of the private study, leaning against the marble mantelpiece with a glass of neat bourbon in his hand. He never hovered invasively, yet his watchful presence acted like an impenetrable shield between Rebecca and the outside world.
""The patient requires rest, Mr. Moretti,"" the doctor concluded softly, packing her supplies. ""She is running on pure adrenaline and acute shock. A mild sedative would help her sleep through the night.""
""No sedatives,"" Rebecca spoke up quickly, her voice small but firm. ""Please. I need to keep my mind clear. I need to know where I am.""
Gabriel nodded at the physician, dismissing her with a subtle gesture of his chin. Once the door clicked shut, he walked over and set a fresh cup of steaming chamomile tea on the side table beside her velvet armchair.
""Drink it,"" he said gently. ""It will help with the chill. Shock lowers the body’s core temperature.""
Rebecca wrapped her bruised fingers around the warm porcelain mug, breathing in the steam. ""What happens to me now, Mr. Moretti?"" she asked, looking up into his imposing face. ""I know how your family operates. Daniel told me stories. You don't leave witnesses to internal betrayals. Am I your prisoner now too?""
Gabriel let out a short, incredulous breath, shaking his head slowly as he sat in the armchair opposite her. ""Daniel Mercer was a low-level rat who inflated his own importance by inventing bedtime horror stories. The Moretti name carries power, yes, and we are ruthless toward those who betray our syndicate. But we do not prey on the innocent, Rebecca. You are not a prisoner in this house. You never were.""
""Then I can go home? To my aunt's house in Bridgeport?""
Gabriel’s expression darkened slightly, a shadow of genuine concern crossing his features. ""By dawn, Daniel’s criminal associates will realize his morning flight to Dubai was missed. Mercer didn't steal forty-two million dollars alone; he was washing dirty money for an Albanian syndicate operating out of South Chicago. When they discover he has been taken, their first instinct will be to find the woman whose name is plastered across every fraudulent banking charter.""
Rebecca’s heart dropped into her stomach. ""Aunt Margaret...""
""Adrien dispatched a private tactical security detail to your aunt’s home fifteen minutes ago,"" Gabriel said, his tone leaving no room for doubt. ""Mrs. Margaret Vance was safely escorted from her residence and is currently resting in a private, high-security penthouse suite at the Moretti Grand Hotel downtown. She is completely safe, Rebecca. I give you my personal word of honor.""
Rebecca sank back into the plush upholstery, a wave of profound relief washing over her so violently that she felt dizzy. For hours, she had felt like a cornered animal waiting for the final executioner’s axe. Now, in the span of one night, the man who was supposed to be Chicago’s most dangerous phantom had dismantled her abuser, protected her elderly aunt, and offered her sanctuary.
""Why are you doing all of this for me?"" Rebecca asked softly, staring at the billionaire. ""I am just a housekeeper. To you, I should be entirely invisible.""
Gabriel paused, his stormy eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made the breath catch in her throat.
May you like
""Three years ago, my younger sister Sophia suffered a severe panic episode while staying at this estate during a storm,"" Gabriel said quietly, his voice carrying a depth of emotion she hadn't expected. ""The staff fled or stood by frozen in useless confusion. You were the only one who didn't panic. You sat on the floor of her bedroom for four hours, holding her hands, singing an old Irish lullaby until her heart rate normalized. Sophia never forgot your kindness. And neither did I.""
He leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees. ""You have never been invisible to me, Rebecca Foster. You were simply guarded by a monster I took far too long to eliminate.""
