Chapter 10 - The Vow At The Iron Gate

One year later.

The Moretti estate had undergone a complete transformation.

The oppressive, sterile gloom that had once hung over the sprawling property during Daniel Mercer’s tenure had been swept away entirely. The grand limestone mansion was now filled with light, laughter, and blooming white roses imported from the hills of Tuscany.

The infamous wine cellar beneath the estate had been completely dismantled. The steel bolts and subterranean holding cells had been torn out by demolition crews under Gabriel’s personal supervision. In their place, Gabriel had constructed a private, sunlit subterranean botanical garden, featuring glass ceilings that allowed natural light to flood down through the courtyard above.

Today, however, the estate's massive grounds were adorned for a celebration that Chicago society would talk about for decades.

Thousands of white fairy lights hung from the ancient oak trees. A string quartet played softly near the marble fountains. Three hundred select guests—not underworld syndicates, but close friends, foundation directors, recovered survivors, and family—sat on the pristine lawn facing an altar constructed entirely of white orchids and ivy.

Aunt Margaret sat in the front row, wearing an elegant lavender silk gown, dabbing happy tears from her wrinkled cheeks with a lace handkerchief. Beside her sat Sophia Moretti, Gabriel's sister, beaming with sheer joy.

At the altar stood Gabriel Moretti.

He was breathtaking in a classic black tuxedo, his hair impeccably styled, his towering frame exuding the supreme confidence of a man who possessed everything he had ever desired. Yet his hands fidgeted slightly with his platinum cufflinks—a nervous tell that Adrien Cole chuckled at from his position as best man.

Then, the wedding march began.

The massive iron gates at the entrance of the estate—the very gates that had once separated Rebecca from her salvation—swung wide open, draped in white silk ribbons and cascading jasmine.

Through the gates stepped Rebecca Foster.

A collective gasp rippled through the gathering.

She wore an ethereal, custom-made gown of French lace and silk chiffon that flowed behind her like a river of clouds. Her veil drifted lightly around her shoulders, framing a face that held no trace of past suffering. Her eyes sparkled with emerald brilliance, her smile lighting up the entire afternoon sky.

She walked down the long aisle alone, not because she had no one to give her away, but because she was a woman who walked into her future under her own sovereign power.

When she reached the altar, Gabriel stepped down to meet her, taking both of her hands into his. His eyes were visibly glassy with emotion, looking at her as if she were a miracle that defied all laws of nature.

""You look breathtaking, my Queen,"" Gabriel whispered, his voice thick with reverence.

""You don't look so bad yourself, Mr. Moretti,"" she teased softly, her eyes dancing with love.

The officiant spoke the traditional blessings, but when it came time for the vows, Gabriel put away the pre-written cards and spoke directly from his heart.

""Rebecca,"" Gabriel said, his deep voice carrying across the silent gardens, mesmerizing every guest present. ""A year ago, you sent a message into the dark, looking for a miracle to save you from a monster. You thought you texted the wrong number. But I believe with every fiber of my being that the universe routed that message exactly where it was meant to go. You brought light into my shadows. You taught a ruthless man how to love. I vow to stand as your shield, your partner, your champion, and your most devoted servant for all the days of my life.""

Tears of pure happiness spilled down Rebecca’s cheeks as she squeezed his hands.

""Gabriel,"" she said, her voice clear and resonant. ""You broke down iron gates and tore through stone walls to pull me from the dark. You gave me back my dignity, my strength, and my voice. With you, I am not a victim of my past; I am the author of my future. I promise to love you fiercely, stand beside you through every storm, and walk hand-in-hand with you in the light forever.""

""By the power vested in me,"" the officiant smiled warmly, ""I now pronounce you husband and wife. Gabriel, you may kiss your bride.""

Gabriel didn't wait. He caught Rebecca around the waist, lifting her slightly off her feet as he brought his lips down onto hers in a deep, breathtaking kiss that sealed their souls together forever.

The guests erupted into thunderous applause, rose petals showering over them like perfumed rain.

As Gabriel set her back down, smiling into her eyes, he took her hand and led her down the aisle toward the open iron gates, where a new life of freedom, immense love, and boundless joy waited for them under the golden Chicago sun."
