Chapter 7 - Sienna’s Desperation

Two weeks after the initial arrests, Sienna Ward was released on a steep three-million-dollar bail, secured only after her father liquidated several offshore commercial properties. Stripped of her passport, fitted with an ankle monitor, and completely abandoned by high society, her glamorous life had evaporated overnight.
Desperation drove her to do the unthinkable.
It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon. Evelyn Reed and I were leaving an administrative hearing at the Travis County Family Court annex. As we walked under an umbrella toward Marcus’s awaiting town car, a figure wrapped in a trench coat and oversized dark sunglasses lunged from behind a stone pillar.
""Clara! Wait! Please, just talk to me for two minutes!""
Two private security guards instantly intercepted her, pinning her arms against her sides. The sunglasses flew off, revealing Sienna’s hollow, sleepless eyes, pale skin, and unwashed hair. The haughty, immaculate woman in the white dress from the hospital room was completely unrecognizable.
""Let her speak for thirty seconds,"" I told the guards, stepping forward while keeping a safe distance behind my security detail.
Sienna fell to her knees right there on the wet pavement, the muddy rainwater soaking through her designer trousers. ""Clara, you have to tell the prosecutors that I didn't know about the extortion! Julian told me you wanted the money! He told me you didn't want the babies because you couldn't afford them!""
I stared down at her, astonished by the sheer audacity of her lies. ""You stood three feet from my wheelchair, Sienna. You held the pacifiers. You smiled and said 'our lives' when Julian demanded I disappear permanently. You watched me bleed through my hospital gown.""
""He manipulated me!"" Sienna sobbed hysterically, clawing at the hem of my security guard's coat. ""My father is cutting me off! The feds are seizing everything! If I’m convicted of grand larceny and money laundering, I’m looking at fifteen years in federal prison! I’m twenty-six, Clara! My life will be over!""
""My life—and the lives of my sons—would have been destroyed if your plan had worked,"" I said, my voice steady, sharp, and resolute. ""You weren't an innocent bystander, Sienna. You were an active participant who enjoyed every second of humiliating a woman at her weakest moment. You wanted Julian's stolen millions, you wanted the social status, and you were perfectly willing to steal two newborn infants to secure it.""
""Please, Clara! Have mercy! You're a mother!"" she pleaded, tears mixing with the rain on her face.
""Precisely because I am a mother, you will never get mercy from me,"" I said with cold finality. ""Every choice you made brought you to this pavement. Now you will face the consequences.""

I turned my back on her and stepped into the warmth of the town car. Evelyn slid in beside me, and the driver smoothly pulled away from the curb. In the side mirror, I watched Sienna kneeling in the rain, screaming into the empty street, completely broken, while court officers approached to cite her for violating bail conditions.
She had sought to crown herself queen of an empire stolen from others. Now, she was nothing more than a ruined felon awaiting her cell.
