Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Vulture Clan

The fallout didn't stop with Julian, Eleanor, and Sienna. The twenty-two family members who had eagerly crowded into my hospital room to intimidate a recovering mother were about to learn that complicity has a very steep price.

Within seventy-two hours of the arrests, Evelyn Reed filed a comprehensive civil lawsuit in the Travis County District Court, naming every single relative who had signed Julian’s sham agreement as a witness or stood as an enforcer in that room. The causes of action were devastating: intentional infliction of emotional distress, civil conspiracy, and medical vulnerability harassment.

Chloe and Beatrice, Julian’s entitled sisters, were the first to feel the hammer fall. Both had long enjoyed lavish lifestyles funded entirely by ""consulting fees"" drawn from Vance Enterprises—salaries for jobs they never performed. On Monday morning, Marcus terminated their contracts with immediate effect, cut off their corporate credit cards, and revoked their access to company-owned luxury apartments in downtown Austin.

Desperate and terrified, Beatrice attempted to ambush me at Marcus’s estate later that week. She stood outside the security gates, screaming through the intercom system.

""Clara! Pick up! You have to drop this lawsuit!"" Beatrice shrieked, her voice shaking with panic. ""The bank just froze my mortgage! My husband’s firm is dropping him as a partner because his name is listed on your public court filing! We were just supporting our brother! We didn't do anything illegal!""

I pressed the intercom button from the security desk inside the gatehouse. My voice was calm, ice-cold, and entirely devoid of mercy.

""You stood over my hospital bed, Beatrice,"" I said, my words echoing clearly through the exterior speakers. ""You watched your brother try to buy my three-day-old babies. You laughed when Sienna mocked my surgical pain. You brought iced coffee and treated the destruction of my family like a spectator sport.""

""Clara, please!"" Beatrice begged, bursting into genuine tears of terror. ""I have two children of my own! Think of family!""

""You didn't think of family when you came to take mine,"" I replied coldly. ""You have thirty seconds to leave this gate before the armed security team has you arrested for trespassing and violating the protective order. Never speak to me again.""

I released the button. Through the high-definition security monitor, I watched Beatrice collapse against the hood of her luxury car, weeping in utter helplessness before scrambling back inside and speeding away.

Uncle Harold and Cousin Greg, two senior executives who had handled the fraudulent paperwork within Vance Enterprises, were terminated within forty-eight hours. Facing federal perjury charges for signing false affidavits in support of Julian’s custody claim, both men entered frantic plea negotiations with the Department of Justice, turning over thousands of internal emails that further incriminated Julian and Eleanor.

The Vance family empire was cannibals eating their own. In their desperate bids to avoid prison sentences, the relatives who had stood shoulder-to-shoulder in my hospital room were now frantically testifying against one another, trading secrets for immunity, and watching their generational status dissolve into complete ruin.

The high-society country club that Eleanor had reigned over for thirty years quietly revoked the family’s membership, wiping the Vance name from every donor plaque and charity board. The social circle that had once bowed to Eleanor’s every whim now treated the family name like a toxic plague.

Sitting on the sunlit terrace of Marcus’s estate, watching the breeze ruffle the live oak leaves while my babies slept safely nearby, I felt an extraordinary sense of peace. The vultures had come to feast on my vulnerability. Instead, they had walked into their own slaughterhouse.
