Chapter 5 - The Public Unraveling

By midday, the arrest of Julian Vance and his socialite mother, Eleanor Vance, had ignited a media firestorm across the country. Every major news network ran the breaking chyron: Billionaire Real Estate Scion Arrested in Multi-Million Dollar Embezzlement and Extortion Ring.

I sat in Marcus’s media room, feeding Leo while Oliver rested comfortably against my chest. The television screen displayed a live broadcast outside the federal courthouse in downtown Austin. A massive swarm of reporters, camera operators, and flashbulbs surrounded the front steps as Julian and Eleanor were led out in federal transit jumpsuits, their hands chained to their waists.

""Julian! Did you attempt to buy your newborn twins for $150,000?"" a reporter shouted, shoving a microphone past the security barricades.

""Eleanor! Were Vance Enterprises housing projects used to launder money to Cayman shell corporations?"" another voice roared.

Eleanor kept her face covered with her shackled hands, sobbing hysterically as her expensive designer blowout collapsed in ruins. Julian kept his head bowed, his once-pristine arrogance shattered into complete, humiliated silence.

Beside them, Sienna’s high-profile arrest video was already trending across every social media platform. A bystander had captured footage of her being escorted into an unmarked squad car outside Vance Tower, kicking and screaming obscenities while luxury retail shopping bags scattered across the sidewalk. Within hours, high-society brands she had represented as an influencer issued public statements permanently terminating their contracts and condemning her actions.

Marcus entered the room carrying a silver tray with hot tea and fresh fruit. He set it down on the table beside me and sat in the opposite armchair, watching the news feed with quiet satisfaction.

""The board just appointed me interim Chairman and CEO,"" Marcus said quietly. ""We’ve initiated a full independent audit of every municipal contract signed during Julian’s tenure. The city council has already agreed to preserve the affordable housing initiatives under new, transparent management.""

""What about the family assets?"" I asked, looking down at my sons.

""The courts have frozen Julian’s personal bank accounts, his luxury vehicles, and his private equity portfolios pending restitution for the defrauded city funds,"" Marcus answered. ""Eleanor’s estate is facing millions in civil liabilities from minority shareholders. The Vance family dynasty as they knew it—built on intimidation, corruption, and stolen public funds—is completely finished.""

Evelyn walked in shortly after, carrying an official blue-backed legal document. Her face beamed with uncharacteristic warmth.

""Good news from the family court,"" Evelyn said, handing me the papers. ""Judge Martinez just signed the expedited custody decree. Given the felony indictments, the video evidence of extortion, and the immediate flight risk Julian posed, the court has awarded you sole, exclusive legal and physical custody of Leo and Oliver.""

I took the document, my fingers tracing the official gold seal pressed into the paper. Tears finally welled in my eyes—not of pain or grief, but of overwhelming relief. ""And visitation?""

""Denied with prejudice,"" Evelyn stated firmly. ""Julian will have zero contact, zero visitation rights, and zero parental authority. Furthermore, the court has officially sanctioned the removal of the Vance surname from their birth certificates upon your formal request.""

""Clara Reed,"" I whispered, smiling through my tears as I looked down at the two precious lives resting in my arms. ""That’s who they are. They will never bear the stain of Julian’s greed.""

""There's one more thing,"" Evelyn added, her expression turning serious. ""The $150,000 Julian transferred to your account yesterday before your departure from the hospital.""

""I don't want a single cent of his dirty money,"" I said immediately, a flash of anger crossing my mind. ""Send it back to the bankruptcy receiver.""

""We don't have to,"" Marcus intervened with a knowing smile. ""Evelyn and I reviewed the deposit. It came directly from Julian’s personal discretionary account, not the corporate funds. Under Texas law, since he attempted to use it as an illegal inducement, it has been categorized as an unconditional, non-refundable gift to you. We can legally transfer the entire amount into an untouchable educational trust fund for Leo and Oliver.""

I looked at Marcus, then back down at my boys. A slow, triumphant smile spread across my face. Julian had tried to use $150,000 to erase me and steal my children. Instead, his money would pay for their top-tier education, completely out of his control.

""Set up the trust,"" I said softly. ""Let Julian pay for the very future he tried to steal.""
