Chapter 4 - The Honeypot Ledger

By nine o'clock that morning, I walked into the gleaming glass atrium of Apex Biotech in South San Francisco.

Employees nodded and greeted me with warm smiles as I passed the reception desk. To the fifty scientists, engineers, and clinical coordinators working on the floor, I was the brilliant founder who had made their careers possible.

To Tristan, I was an intellectual asset waiting to be liquidated.

I walked directly into the primary formulation laboratory on the third floor.

Tessa Jenkins was already standing at a laminar flow hood, wearing an oversized white lab coat with her blonde hair tucked neatly into a bouffant cap.

When she heard my footsteps, she jumped slightly, her hand knocking over a plastic rack of empty test tubes.

"Dr. Hastings!" Tessa stammered, her cheeks flushing bright crimson as she scrambled to pick up the plastic cylinders. "Good morning! I didn't expect you in so early."

"Relax, Tessa," I said with an easy, encouraging smile, stepping up beside her workstation. "I hear you were working late last night with Tristan on the server archives."

Tessa froze, her eyes darting toward the security glass separating the lab from the executive hallway.

"Oh... yes. Mr. Davis was very concerned about server redundancy before the clinical review board meets next month. I just... I was just assisting him with the data transfer."

"You're doing fantastic work," I said, resting a hand gently on her shoulder.

She flinched under my touch, guilt radiating off her skin like heat from a radiator.

"In fact," I continued smoothly, "I want you to handle the master synthesis dataset for our new targeted polymer vehicle. I just uploaded the unreleased molecular sequencing to the internal server folder labeled 'Project Lazarus.'"

Tessa’s breath caught in her throat. She tried to maintain a neutral expression, but the greed and excitement in her eyes were unmistakable.

"Project Lazarus?" she echoed softly. "Is that the final formulation for the patent expansion?"

"The very one," I smiled, looking down at her desk where a flash drive was partially concealed beneath an open protocol notebook. "It’s the crown jewel of Apex, Tessa. If another company got their hands on that sequence, it would be worth hundreds of millions of dollars."

"I'll make sure it's completely secured, Dr. Hastings," she promised, her voice trembling with manufactured sincerity.

"I know you will," I whispered, turning and walking out of the lab.

What Tessa didn't know was that "Project Lazarus" was not the breakthrough formulation.

Two hours ago, Adrian’s cyber-forensics consultant had built that directory from scratch.

Every molecular sequence inside that folder contained an invisible digital watermark—a patented synthetic marker embedded into the DNA code that reported its precise geographic coordinates and IP address whenever it was compiled or loaded into external bioinformatics software.

If Tessa copied that file and delivered it to Julian Mercer at Chiron Therapeutics, she wouldn't just be stealing trade secrets.

She would be carrying a digital tracking device directly into our competitor's server room.
