Chapter 2 - The Velvet Trap

The room began to spin around me.

Every single milestone from the past seven years flashed through my mind like a reel of exposed film.

The endless eighty-hour weeks in the sterile basement lab, the chemical burns on my forearms, the patent rejections we had celebrated overcoming with cheap takeout noodles—none of it had been a partnership to Tristan.

It had been an extended acquisition campaign.

"He targeted fifty-one percent," I whispered, the nausea rising in my throat. "He knew our venture capital partners wanted to license my targeted oncology delivery platform to Big Pharma for an immediate buyout, and he knew I would never sell out before stage-three clinical trials."

"Exactly," Adrian said, turning his laptop toward me. "With your veto intact, Tristan couldn't force a sale. But if he held your voting shares under the marital consolidation clause, he could execute an exclusive commercial transfer to Novartis or Pfizer before your wedding anniversary."

"And Tessa?" I asked, my voice cracking as I showed him the photo of the young lab tech asleep in Tristan's Range Rover.

Adrian examined the timestamps on the private social media post, his brow furrowing into deep, angry creases. "Tessa Jenkins was hired six months ago. Right around the time Tristan posted that picture of your engagement ring."

"She’s an assistant in my secondary formulation lab," I said, remembering how timidly the girl had answered my interview questions. "She has access to the raw synthesis logs."

Adrian typed rapidly into his secure terminal, running a background check against the corporate employee registry.

"Look at this," Adrian said, pointing to the screen. "Tessa didn't just graduate from Stanford with an undergraduate biology degree. Her legal guardian and maternal uncle is Julian Mercer."

I gasped, gripping the edge of the conference table so hard my knuckles turned pure white.

"Julian Mercer? The managing partner at Chiron Therapeutics?"

"The very same," Adrian confirmed, looking up at me with grim realization. "Chiron Therapeutics lost the patent race to Apex's cellular delivery vehicle two years ago. Their stock dropped forty percent after your patent was granted."

The pieces fell into place with terrifying, calculated symmetry.

Tristan hadn't just taken a young mistress out of petty vanity or wandering lust. He was actively coordinating with our fiercest corporate competitor to stage a hostile IP transfer from within my own laboratory.

"He's giving her our formulation," I said, cold fury replacing the sorrow in my chest. "The late-night photos in my lab... he wasn't just taking her there for an affair. He was giving her access to my encrypted synthesis drives."

Adrian leaned back in his leather chair, a dark, predatory smile touching his mouth.

"Then we don't cancel this wedding, Zoe," Adrian said quietly. "We give him the exact spectacle he’s been planning for six months. And we let him sign his own corporate death warrant at the altar."
