Chapter 1 - The Midnight Audit

The streetlamp outside the rooftop bar cast a harsh, amber glare over the damp pavement of Mission Street.
My fingers trembled against the glass screen of my phone as Adrian’s deep, measured voice cut through the fog. "Zoe? You haven't called me at midnight since Dad died. What did Tristan do?"
"He didn't just break our vows before making them, Adrian," I whispered, pulling my trench coat tight against the biting Pacific wind. "He’s trying to steal Apex. He's been planning this since before he bought the ring."
A heavy silence fell over the line, followed by the sound of papers rustling and a desk drawer sliding open. Adrian was already in lawyer mode.
"Send me everything you have," Adrian instructed, his voice dropping into the icy tone that made Fortune 500 boards settle out of court. "The screenshots, the timestamps, every single byte. Don't confront him tonight."
"He's inside right now, Adrian, laughing with the marketing directors while Tessa's lipstick is still on his shirt," I said, a bitter tear burning down my cheek. "How am I supposed to sleep next to him?"
"You don't sleep next to an adversary, Zoe; you observe him," Adrian replied sharply. "Take a rideshare to my firm's satellite office on Montgomery. I'll have the security guard buzz you into the private conference room. We pull the original incorporation charter tonight."
I turned my head and looked through the glass doors of the rooftop lounge.
Tristan was leaning against the mahogany bar, raising a flute of vintage champagne to toast our Series B lead investors. His smile was dazzling, magnetic, and completely devoid of a conscience.
Beside him on the barstool sat Tessa Jenkins's designer handbag, which he had carried inside for her earlier.
I slipped my diamond ring into my coat pocket, stepped into the waiting rideshare at the curb, and never looked back.
Twenty minutes later, I entered the glass-paneled offices of Hastings & Vance Legal. Adrian was already seated at the head of the conference table, surrounded by three towering stacks of manila legal files.
"Here's the master founder agreement from six years ago," Adrian said without preamble, sliding a thick blue binder across the polished table. "Read section fourteen, subsection B. The marital co-mingling clause."
I opened the document, my eyes scanning the dense legal jargon until the ink blurred.
"Tristan insisted on adding this provision during our third funding round," I murmured, my heart dropping straight into my stomach. "He said it was standard boilerplate to protect our shares against outside corporate raiders in the event of an executive marriage."
"It's not standard boilerplate, Zoe," Adrian said, tapping his fountain pen against the page with a dull, rhythmic thud. "It's an automated irrevocable proxy."

I looked up at my brother, unable to breathe.
"If you marry Tristan Davis without a certified separate-property postnuptial agreement," Adrian explained, his eyes burning with fury, "your primary class-A voting rights automatically consolidate under the CEO's seat to prevent deadlocks. The day you say 'I do,' you legally surrender your scientific veto power."
